Missing from the census?

Post by Mizztraveller »

Hi. Does anyone have any ideas on how a family can be missing from a census? I have ancestors who are on the 1861, 1871, 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses (at the same address) but I just can't find them in 1881. The name is James/James and Mary Evans so not much room for a major mis-spelling. Are there any free sites where I can check by address? I'm only a paying member of Ancestry.com and they're by name only.

I believe Find My Past allows you to search by address.
Very occasionally pages are missing.
You might try looking at neighbours to see if they appear in consecutive census.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.
