Marriage & Death Records

Hello fellow genealogists,

I'm new to this forum (as of today), so please bear with me, if this is completly off topic.

I'm danish national, and by following the trail of one of relatives I've ended up i the UK. My general question is, can i be true, that Marriage & Death Records in the UK can only be access online through fee based subscriptions, or it is a matter of knowing the right access point?

Background: The person I'm tracing is by the name Ankjær Christensen Pilgaard, around 1920-1930'ish. On FamilySearch I've found the following two sources (no images available):

* England and Wales Marriage Registration Index, 1837-2005, 1918, Ankjer C Pilgaard & Mollie Mordaunt
* England and Wales Death Registration Index 1837-2007, 1931, Ankjer C Pilgaard

I'm pretty sure it's the right guy, but i need to access the original records to verify birth date and place.

Any help and/or pointers will be greatly appreciated.

You might be able to access FreeBMD,FreeReg for index info but you have to apply to the GRO for copies of the certificates for which there is a fee.

Thanks a lot for your reply. The FreeBMD and FreeReg did not yield any results, but as they state, not everything has been transcribed yet. I registered at the GRO and ... low and behold ... there i found his death. I've ordered a pdf copy of the record, for which they charge £7. A bit steap i thought, but thats how it is.

If the Death record proves him to be my relative, he also married in 1918 in the UK, and then the next step would be to find out if they got any children. Would that be possible to do online?. I expect I would have to subscribe to an online records ressource, but which would be the best suited for this purpose: Ancestry, MyHeritage or some other UK company? It seems he lived in Pancras, London if that has any influence on the best resource to chose.

Births Dec 1919 (>99%)

Searching FreeBMD choosing all for surname Pilgaard with year range 1915 - 1980 gives:
Marriages Dec 1918 (>99%)
Pilgaard Ankjer C Mordaunt Pancras 1b 266

Pilgaard Pauline Mordaunt Pancras 1b 80

Deaths Jun 1931 (>99%)
