Sorry, kdw, I didn't mean to be mysterious! I believe Nellie'smother was Elizabeth TROMANS (b.1871) daughter of Edward TROMANS (b.1840) and Ellen WEAVER (b,1841). I just need to get my census records and other evidence in order!

And I have an apology for an earlier post - a typographical mistake on the Birth Certificate for John Thomas FOWLKS. The Informant should have been Rosannah FOWLKS.

I agree that you have the right George SMITH (son of William and Elizabeth) in 1939, but he is a Widower. His wife was Sarah WILD but I think that she died in 1932:

That would be my bet for May.

I wonder if she was named for Elizabeth's sister Florence TROMANS (b.1883) who may be the wife of John BOSWELL (M/1909/JUN/Dudley/6C/96). Nellie was living with John and Florrie BOSWELL at the time of the 1911 Census.
