Re: COMPLETED - 92 yr old Len Beddow proudly holds his medal
Len Beddow sadly passed away
6/7/1923 - 27/6/2019 age 95
Sandra has added some photo in the gallery
The following was taken from Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry 1939-1945 Facebook page
Len (served with his brother in 24th Lancers and then Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry).
From the 'Black Country Bugle' dated July 31st 2019.
Len served with the 24th Lancers in Normandy before joining the Sherwood Rangers at the beginning of August 1944.
Serving with C Squadron, Len was considered one of the finest gunners in the Squadron. In fact he was Lt.Stuart Hills' gunner during the battle for Geel where he shot his way into the centre of the town only to find themselves surrounded for two nights, before they shot their way out again. At wars end Len was test firing German Panzers at Paderborn!!
A postman and poet in civvie street Len passed away this June 2019
The photo in the article shows Len, second from left, with his three brothers who also served.
Also from Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry 1939-1945 Facebook page
Len Beddow was my uncle and he was a gentle man in spite of having to fight in the war as a gunner in a Sherman tank.
At the age of 95 he still mourned the death of his comrades and during his life write many poems about the “Evil of War” He had this little booklet of his thoughts published.
Thank you to Karl McDermott for being in touch with him on behalf of the Sherwood Rangers. We are indebted to him for his concern and love for those who served.
Thank you Karl.
