Samuel Stevenson -who was he?

Post by AnnieD »

First post; my GG Grandfather was a Samuel Stevenson/Stephenson. A huge brick wall, on his daughters marriage certificate in 1868 in Australia he was listed as father and a Surgeon, mother listed as Mary Ann Devine, they are mysteries. Louisa also stated she was born in Evandale TasmaniaAus in 1846, we’ve found no evidence, the only Samuel we have found was a convict who was assigned to a Dr DeSailly on his arrival in Tasmania. They appear to have vanished, we have no evidence of either parent...in Tasmania or in Victoria where Louisa ended up. My DNA links me to an Enoch Stevenson bn Stone, Staffordshire in 1819 and died in Kansas USA 1890 as well as a Elizabeth Stevenson married to a William Parkes, Elizabeth was born in 1844 Stone, Staffordshire and her father was Phillip Stevenson born 1804 and married Harriet Allman. It appears there is a link between Enoch, Phillip and Samuel; any suggestions would be most valuable. BTW Samuel was sentenced in Newcastle under Lyme 4th January 1831, travelled to Australia on the Elizabeth arriving 14 February 1832; he stated he was a widower and his wife had been dead for 5 years? Thanks for allowing me to join the site!

Thank you for all the follow up
With regard to the Trove article I have my doubts about that accuracy....as I think he was great at covering his trail.....my father, uncle and several cousins all match the descendants of Enoch Stevenson who migrated to USA and I’ve also discovered the connection to Elizabeth Stevenson’s descendants???

I think this is one of those old records from Family Search that someone was “fishing” and then couldn’t remove.
Louisa was only my Great Grandmother and lived in the same town we live now from before she married her first husband William Trevillian......the house is still standing today and it was next door to my grandparents.....I think over the years people have tried everything to search for the family, Trevillian descendants have written a short history of their family and I do have a copy....what a mystery

Interesting that it brings in a Cornish-sounding name though

George Swettenham is easier to find. Where to he get to in Australia? At least they were kept together in prison and transportation!

Yes I believe this is our correct Samuel; it doesn’t appear that George Swettenham ever left Tasmania, think he passed away around 1870 from memory, I was hoping George May have led us to Samuel too. I sent to UK for more information on the court appearances they sent copies of about 3 appearances in court but there are no records of where he lived, his age or his family, it appears all the records were destroyed. Thank you for your interest in trying to find this elusive ancestor!
