I have found a poss birth for him

1851
PORTMAN Thomas Halesowen Dudley Register Office HAL/010/476

but not one for Joseph Portman not around 1854 Halesowen area

he puts age 20 on that marriage in 1874 12 Sept
so b 1853 birthday after Sept 12
or
b 1854 b before 12 Sept
and there just isnt one for mids area

as on census coming out b 1851
but as I say cant find a Joseph Portman that fits

the names Robert Byng /Swithen/Ellen/ Bertha all link back to that family and the marriage for dau Elizabeth byng

Rite I am convinced that Eliza unknown is our Eliza
just looked on the 1891 and she and Thomas are living next door to Swithen
the clues are all there
so I am joining up

Its quite possible that they put Thomas by mistake in the 1881 census.

Just don't see him before this.. or Joseph for the matter..
