Am trying to map out a Powell surname which was associated with North London, Hampstead. It's a bit of a 'Poirot' because my paternal grandmother was a maiden Powell of Hampstead (or Dalston) yet moved to Bromley in Kent, and I wondered why Kent? I'm wondering if there was a family connection with Kent from previous generations. The trouble is, I am coasting towards the 1837 watershed, beyond which tracing surnames becomes more difficult.
Several ladies from this line were associated with the laundry trade, and several of the men-folk were associated with horses, ostlers and cab drivers for example, so I think there's some form of family tradition going on here - but it's vague, and I could be wrong.
The earliest I have is a Thomas Powell ['ostler'] b.1791, d.abt 1845 and his spouse Charlotte b.1801, d.abt 1871 who may have had the maiden name of (?) Marles.
On an 1851 Census: HO107, Piece 1492, Folio 114, Page 15, a Charlotte Powell (Head, widow) is listed as "washerwoman", so the laundry and horse ['ostler'] association is also there. Charlotte's age is 50 on the census so that ties in with her birth year. Thomas and Charlotte would be my paternal great gt gt grandparents.
Have uploaded a very tentative Powell family tree for this era, any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Many thanks!
When it says "Not born in County" does this mean the county of London please, & if so, where did the county extend to in 1841, so that I could search neighbouring counties for Thomas Powell's birth details?
Can only gain a vague idea of the districts of London circa 1841 but the 'Metropolis of London' had the tiny City of London at its core and took in all the immediate districts around it. So it looks like Lambeth / Camberwell (part of Surrey in those days?) would fall 'out of county'?
I found several FMP references to a Thomas POWELL. But these are only census returns of course:-
Powell Thomas b.1796, from the 1841 Census, Camberwell, London & Surrey, England.
Powell Thomas b.1792, from the 1851 Census, Saint Giles Camberwell, Camberwell, London & Surrey, England.
Powell Thomas b.1794, from the 1851 Census, Saint Mary Newington, Newington, London & Surrey, England.
Powell Thomas b.1791, from the 1871 Census, St Mary Newington, St Saviour Southwark, London & Surrey, England.

This clears up the complicated surnames of my paternal grandmother. Again, I'm seeing this pattern of laundry work & work with horses.
Louisa Mary (nee Powell / dau of George Hunt + Louisa Powell) moved to Kent, I wonder if censuses will throw any light on the reason why - that's quite a relocation from Hampstead, North London? Her father was a soldier & she married one, possibly the reason for the change of location, I think he was a 'man of Kent' - ?
Man of Kent - born East of the Medway Kentish Man - born West of the Medway I'm only 'ish being born near Dartford in NW Kent.
It might be worth checking to see if your paternal grandfather's employer moved to Bromley as that might explain your grandmother's move. I know there's quite a bit of antipathy between those who are born on different sides of the Thames but it isn't that far to move, either for employment or because a spouse (or future spouse) lives on the 'wrong' side of the river.

Many thanks SRD,
My father was born just before 1920 in Kent so I guess I should start looking at the census returns here, they might give some clue as to what was happening in terms of occupations?
The Old Kent Road was something of a highway to Kent from London, reminding me of the 'holiday hop-picking' that Londoners used to engage in?
The 1939 Register might give your father's and grand-parents place of abode, date of birth & occupation although, being 19, he may already have joined up by then. If he lived in what is now the Greater London area he may also appear in the electoral roll/voters lists for the post war era.
