Newb here - hope this is the right category to post in please?

Found a thumbnail reference to a relative at 'thegenealogist' website. Can I access this census at a library please?

London 1841 Census
Name: Thomas Powell
Age: 50
Born In: 1791
Profession: Horsekeeper

Thomas married a Charlotte but I don't know her maiden name. I'm also trying to trace Thomas' line.

At the ‘ROOTS’ website appeared the following:-

"St John at Hampstead Camden, January 10th 1841 [census?]

POWELL Louisa - daughter of Thomas POWELL - Ostler and his wife Charlotte, Hampstead."

Louisa may have been my subsequent relative. An 'ostler' is a horsekeeper.

The 1851 Census England Middlesex Hampstead [HO107/1492/114/15], 'Flash Walk' lists

"POWELL Charlotte, Head, Wid, 50, Washerwoman, Middlesex Hampstead
Louisa, Dau, Unmarr, 10, Middlesex Hampstead"

which all ties in.

At 'findmypast' I found a reference to

"Thomas Powell Born 1798 Edmonton St John Hampstead Middlesex, London", but this is probably the wrong family because 'the genealogist' find (above) listed Powell as being born in 1791, on the 1841 Census. Thomas Powell was a popular name in the Victorian era, as was the profession of horsekeeping, so I am cautious.

It is strange that the census has a discrepancy over Thomas' age?

Louisa's date of birth must be 1840/1. I had her down as being born earlier but that was probably my guesstimate.

If your local library has Ancestry you will be able to look at the Census sheets for 1841 online and, depending on the library's policy, you might be able to print off a copy of the relevant page, or grab a screenshot, or download to a your own disc. The same is true for subsequent census records up to 1901. You can look at the individual household returns for 1911. Also the 1939 Register is available.

The 1841 Census is notorious for being out by up to five years on birth dates as dates were frequently rounded up or down to the nearest 5 years.

The General Register Office has info on births & deaths from 1837. If you want you can order pdf copies from them but that can get expensive on extended families, most of us are content with the online details.
