Re: I need some advice ....
Thx Jimmy, wasn't sure if Wales was at the same time, they married in June, I would have thought Philip Powell couldn't have been far away, only 2 months, possibly a very quick romance

Re: I need some advice ....
As for the witnesses at the wedding - I would need to look at the marriage certificate which is with my grandmother. It might take me a few days to get it. I know that one of the witnesses was William Shaw's mother, and I'm not sure about the other person ... you'll have to give me a while, maybe tomorrow I will be able to get the info. I know that they were married in a registry office.
thanks

Births Sep 1889
Powell Alice Maud Pontypridd 11a 452
Births Mar 1890
Powell Alice Maud Pontypool 11a 166
was there a reason for her to get married in bedwelty parents married there ? parents buried there ? or was she born there as census inconsistant ?
I get the feeling that one of these people is her - as she was meant to be born late 1889, I've been told her bday was Dec 26. So perhaps her birth wasn't registered till new year, making the 1890 birth the most likely. And both Pontypool and Pontypridd seem significant.
As for Bedwelty for the Marriage - I think that this has something to do with husband William Shaw - they meet because he was friends with older brother, both had some connection to military - went to boar together I have heard. William Shaw was also working as a collier, his mother Alice Yates (remarried), moved to Wales because she married someone from around the region. She was one of the witnesses at the wedding. Hopefully, I can get the other witness tomorrow although I wouldn't be suprised if it was older brother. It is getting late over here so to late to ring my gran but I will try to ring her tomorrow

thankyou for that peterd

I have been reading and re-reading through the thread to try and figure it all out. It's confusing because they're all related and living together and there are so many names.
So, to sum it all up.
Mary Powell married Robert Gregory. Her father was Phillip Powell who married Maria Pugsley from Somerset... Mary had sisters Amelia who married Charles Collins, and Elizabeth who married Henry Cousins. It seems like they were all living together and for some reason Robert and Mary Gregory started to raise Robert Collins as their own child. She also had a brother Phillip.
Then we come to Alice Maude Gregory or Powell.
Does it seem like the most likely person to be her father is Phillip Powell jnr - right??
So my next move is to try to find this Phillip Powell and who he married, or if Alice Maude was perhaps illigetimate or something - as she was living with the Gregory's from the age of two, perhaps she lived there from Birth.
But, if one of those birth certificates is really her and the father is Phillip Powell then it should state her birth mother, do children born out of wedlock have birth certificates?
If there is something that I've missed through all of this then please point it out, it's all so complicated to me at the moment - all these people have such complicated living arrangements

At the moment I really want to find Alice Maude's real parents. I will do some more searching in the weekend and try to locate that marriage cert to see who the witnesses are and try to order that birth certificate. If anyone else is able to find out anything else out please let me know ....
Rebecca
