ARC......PULLEY

Post by Susie »

Hi, I have just joined this forum as trying research my father's family tree. I haven't t got very far as I have hit a stumbling block. Backtracked show my greatgrandmother as Tamar Pulley married to John Pulley, but marriage records on the web show she was married to George Pulley. Can anyone shed any light on this - was she married to George or was John also known as George? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes this is as far as I have got because my grandfather's birth certificate shows John as father and Tamar nee Haines as mother. His Army papers show father as John Pulley and mother, Tamar and lists brothers George, Sidney and Charles. Address given was 144 Bloomfield Road, Tipton.

But when trying to find the marriage record it shows George as husband. Before I continued going down that route I wanted to find out of John/George were the same person or if there had been 2 marriages for Tamar.

There is a birth record for a George, but not John,

Maria Pulley 25.
Caroline Pulley 20.
John Pulley 19.

1881. High Strret, Kingswinford.
Mary Ann Pulley 58.
Martha Pulley 27.
John Pulley 15.
Eliza Pulley 12.
Caroline Pulley 9.
George Pulley 5.

Martha Pulley 36.
John Pulley 25. Grandson. Puddler.

I can only assume that George and John are the same person. The 1911 census shows John as head and Tamar as wife. It shows my grandfather William (Willie) with his siblings John, George, Florence, Beatrice, Charles, Nellie and Sidney.

I know this is correct as my grandfather had a newspaper cutting relating to Sidney in his personal possessions and told my father that was his brother.

That's what I thought and his mother could be Martha.

That would make sense Martha being John's mother. It gets very confusing as the census returns are not consistent - on 1871 shown as son of Mary Ann and John, but then on 1891 census shown as grandson. I had made the same conclusion.
