My Great x3 Grandfather Giles Loakes was born between 1830 and 1831 in Witcham Cambs to Giles and Elizabeth Long.

Giles married Hep(h)zibah Wallis in Witcham in 1849
His children were: William b1850, Elizabeth Ann b1852 and John Giles b1856.

In the census 1861 he is found in Spittalfields East London. Hepzibah is mis-transcribed in the index as Elizabeth and Witcham Cambs is mistranscribed as Witham Essex.

Hep(h)zibah died in 1864 in Bethnal Green.

In 1866 he returned to Witcham and married Mary Ann Bowyer b1840 in Witcham. He then had further children: George Edward b1867 and Florence Maud b1872.

The 1871 census shows him with this new (but not the old) family in Witcham.

In 1881 he is living in Rotherhithe and in 1891 in Bermondsey, but he has changed his name to John - he and his second family are mis-transcribed in the index as the 'Gates' family - I found them while searching for all George's born in Witcham in 1867. .

His occupations also change:
1851 - Agricultural Labourer
1856 - Publican
1861 - Railway porter
1864 - Porter
1866 - Labourer in Agriculture
1871 - Farm Labourer
1891 - Hostler Groom
1903 - Carman & Horsekeeper

Giles died in 1903 in Southwark, but as yet I have been unable to find him in the 1901 census.

Any suggestions?

try looking in the local workhouses as sometime families couldn't look after there parent and that were they end up

that look like a good possibility you found for there Loakesy, what was the address for 1901 censes does it match the address on the death cert as that would prove your theory

Everything about this information appears to confirm that it is my ancestor, even down to the son-in-law's occupation.

Unfortunately I can't put my hand on the death cert right now. It's been a while since I last had it, but I'll track it down sooner or later (preferably sooner!)

Do you have an address for that Reeves entry? I'll look it up on my 1901 London discs.

For the life of me, I can't find the file I had on Giles!!! I've turned the house upside down today...

What's really annoying is that it contains the marriage and death certs, 1841-1891 census entries and a whole load of other useful stuff.

I don't suppose I can get here for this new problem, can I?

Many thanks Kate!! All received. I'm not quite sure how to confirm catagorically that this is my Giles, but everything fits, so I guess that may be the best I can get! But given the number of mistranscriptions and name changes, this new information doesn't surprise me. Any comments?

He has been Giles Loakes, Liles Loakes, John Giles Loakes, John Loakes, John Gates, now John reeves. He was married to Hepzibah or Elizabeth, born in Witcham, Cambs or Witham, Norfolk.
He has lived in Witcham, Spittalfields, Witcham and Southwark
He has been a farmer, Railway porter, Publican, Farmer, Cab proprietor, and carman

All in all a bit of a nightmare! I hope now I can put him to bed... At least I can forget about dates now and concentrate on his life story.
