st marys kingswinford and holy trinity

Some years ago, I found the marriage of one of my ancestors took place at a chapel in Brierley Hill in 1772. The records were at Dudley Archives and, from memory (which may not be 100% accurate as it was a long time ago!) were on the same reel as those for the Parish Church, Kingswinford. As far as I can remember, it was a separate place of worship to St. Michaels. Sorry I can't be of any more help.

The register of St Michael commences in 1766. The original registers for the period 1766-1896 (Bapts), 1837-1899 (Mar), and 1766-1898 (Bur), and Banns for the period 1766-1781 (listed under Holy Trinity, Wordsley) are deposited at Dudley Archives & Local History Service.
Note that a few marriages performed here before 1837 are entered in the register of St Mary, Kingswinford.


It may not have been at St Marys but it WAS registered in its Book (Kingswinford Parish Church to make it official ? ) This was kept at Holy Trinity Wordsley

Church History

"St Mary's Church, in Kingswinford village, was the parish church until 1832, and was made a district church in 1846, and a perpetual curacy, in the patronage of Lord Ward, and incumbency of the Rev. H Downing, MA. It is a small ancient fabric, with a massive tower, and contains several monumental inscriptions of the families of Corbyn, Scott, Hodgetts, and Bendy.
Holy Trinity Church at Wordsley, is a spacious and handsome structure, built in 1830/31. It was consecrated as the parish church of Kingswinford in 1831, when all the registers were removed to it from St Mary's, which was considered too small for the other church of this large and populous parish. The rectory is in the patronage of Lord Ward, and incumbency of the Rev Chas Girdlestone, MA.
St John, Brockmoor, was built in 1844/45 to serve the new district parish of Brockmoor. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the patronage of the Crown and Bishop alternately, and in the incumbency of the Rev Alleyne Rodgers, BA.
St Mark, Pensnett, was built in 1848/9 to serve the new district parish of Pensnett. It is a handsome cruciform structure, in the early pointed style, with lancet windows. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the patronage of Lord Ward, and incumbency of the Rev Francis Fowke, MA.
Christ Church, Quarry Bank, was built in 1849 to serve the new district parish of Quarry Bank. It is a neat structure in the early English style. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the patronage of the Crown and Bishop alternately, and incumbency of the Rev W Lamb Cox, MA.
There are Wesleyan chapels at Brockmoor, Brettell Lane, and Mount Pleasant, Primitive Methodist chapels at Quarry Bank and Pensnett, and Independent chapels at Wordsley and Brockmoor."

Some one looked at transcripts St Mary not the film or parish book -it is DEFon film so is there somewhere reel 261 it was catologued under Holy trinity Wordley instead of St Mary Kingswinford at Dudley

So does that mean that it may be regis at Holy Trinity Wordsley .....but will really be St Marys Kingswinford
Yes, it should be in the Holy Trinity Wordsley register, but it will really be St Mary's Kingswinford (Holy Trinity wasn't built until 1831)

but not in St Marys Kingswinford as we have looked .........so look at Holy TRinity???


and what about St Michaels Brierley hill?....could it be there? No, because marriages didn't start there until 1837

Brierley Hill Chapel remained the only other church in the Kingswinford Parish until 1831, when a new church at Wordsley, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, became the parish church for Kingswinford. During this period, the status of St. Michael’s at Brierley Hill grew. The chapel was enlarged in 1823 by adding transepts, changing the church into an almost square building. Between 1835 and 1837, the east end and the galleries were lengthened to create a more conventional shape and so increasing the total seating to 1500. It was not, however, until the 23rd September 1837 that it received a license for the celebration of marriages.
