ARC TBC Thomas Longmore--

Post by BlueSavannah »

Hi,

My Great x 4 Grandfather was Thomas Longmore who was born circa 1795 (place unknown). All I know about Thomas is from the 1841 census where he is in Brierley Hill with his wife Mary and some children including my great x 3 grandmother Hannah. I've been searching around online for any information at all that is my family and the only likely possibles seem to be baptised in Dudley. My Hannah consistently states on census that her birth place is Cradley. There is a marriage in 1813 in Sedgley of a Thomas Longmore to Mary Baker which is also a possible. I am hoping someone will be able to point me in the right direction of where I might be able to look to research this family further?

Thomas as an 'i' in the last column on the 1841 census so I am presuming he is Irish. His wife Mary and all the children have 'Yes' for their county of birth.

Many thanks in advance
Claire

Do you have the family in the 1851 census?

That mark in the last column of the 1841 census looks more like a tick to me, with a random dot. So he might not have been Irish.

Hi,

Many thanks for taking a look at that mark. I thought it was an i but I can see why it also looks like just a mark too.

I don't have the family in 1851 either. I've looked around for them. I wondered if both Thomas & Mary had possibly died. Hannah Longmore, now Hannah Raybould was living in Brockmoor in 1851.

Well, it might be an I - just keep an open mind about it.

Do you have Hannah's marriage cert? Or those of her brothers'? Relatives might be witnesses.

You could try looking at the other Longmore entries for Kingswinford in 1841. See if the older generation are related and perhaps get something from that. There seems to be a Benjamin from Shropshire at least.

I have Hannah's marriage cert to Samuel Raybould. She married at Dudley Parish Church on the 22nd February 1846. She names her father as Thomas Longmore, a Furnaceman. The witnesses mean nothing to me but they are called Matthew Jones & Mary Johnson.

I haven't bought any of her siblings' certs yet but that's more because I can't be sure who are the right ones.

I am getting nowhere with this.

Perhaps this is worth looking up (if possible) to see who the father is.

1849
LONGMORE John TROW Keziah Wordsley, Holy Trinity Dudley Register Office 018/003/69

I don't see an obvious death for Thomas, not if he was alive for Hannah's marriage in 1846 and then dead by the census in 1851.

Matthew Jones seems to be a neighbour, think I found him a door or two away on the census but could not find a family connection.

I had seen a Thomas 1851, earlier around the right age but was a gas pipe maker or something like that, his wife was quite a bit younger though :? Darlaston may be. Having problems with this computer!

Thank you everyone for taking the time to have a look for this man. I think he's going to remain a brick wall for me at the moment. Hannah doesn't say that her father is deceased on her marriage cert but I know that doesn't really mean anything.

Many thanks for checking this marriage. Could an Iron Tester and a Forgeman possibly be similar/same? Shame that John's age wasn't given as that would have helped to rule him in or out.
