*ARC TBC* John Southern b abt 1801 on BCC-Jo adding

This John Southern:
http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/tr ... ver=350549

I don't think he was born in Kingswinford in 1801, I think he was born in Stourbridge abt 1798 - I have found him in 1871 living with his daughter and her family (see next post).

I think he was bapt 30 Dec 1798, Old Swinford, s of John Southorn and Elizabeth (ODM on IGI).

John Southern in 1871 census, Quarry Bank:

Richard Clayton, Head, 25, Coal Miner, b Kingswinford
Mary Clayton, wife, 24, b Kingswinford
Elizabeth Clayton, dau, 5, b Kingswinford
John Clayton, son 3, b Kingswinford
Septimus, son, 2, b Kingswinford
John Southern, boarder, widowed, 75, b Stonebridge, Worcestershire (think this should be Stourbridge)
William Clayton, lodger, 19, b Kingswinford

Mary, the wife of Richard Clayton in that 1871 census entry, is, I think, the daughter of John Southern.

There is this marriage:
Dudley Register Office, 016/001/221
1866 Christ Church, Quarry Bank
Richard Clayton/ Mary Southall (sic)

Her age in the census fits with Mary Southern, Johns daughter, already on BCC, so it looks like 'Southall' on the marriage index is an error.

And Mary Southall, 19, d of John Southwell !!

Make of that what you will....

1881, Maughan Street, Quarry Bank:

Richard Clayton, head, 34, miner
Mary, wife, 33
John, 13
Septimus, 11
Mary, 9
Richard, 7
James, 5
Handel, 3
Elizabeth, 0
All born Quarry Bank

Edited to add: the names Septimus and Handel are obviously after the children of John Southern/ Lydia Round!

Going back to Lydia Round, wife of John Southern- she also might not have been helpful on the census: remember she married in Tipton: there is a bapt 18 Apr 1813, Tipton, Lydia d of William Round/ Sarah
