An Education in Dialects.

Post by AndrewA »

Ok folks I have been a bit quiet recently, worn out from the long walking and long day, but I am enjoying my time speaking to the public.

Today I was chastised by a 75 year old woman for being a Southerner who can not pronounce Black Country names properly, I can not recall correctly the exact name, and if I did then of course it will be against customer confidentiality clauses I have signed, but then general gist of it was that I did not pronounce the vowels properly with the other letters! She took great delight in educating me how to speak properly!

We had a good laugh in the end about it, she asked where I was from, told her South coast Portsmouth Southampton way and she said "I KNEW IT!"

On way home tonight I was thinking about this in terms of family history and census and certainly realised how easily an official recording records could make mistake when taking a name from someone verbally.
Hit a Brickwall? Have you lost all trace of someone? Do not despair, simply make a note they were abducted by aliens! Don't believe in aliens? No problem, just write them off as having disapeared in a time portal

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

I read somewhere that if you could not find a family in census then it is worth holding your nose and saying the name out loud, then try to spell it the way it sounds. The reasoning is that everyone had enlarged adenoids back then.

Is that a scientific proven fact Gardener? Or is this that tongue in cheek Icelandic wit that Ice People are renowned for?

Oh and what does that mean "Rowley Regis to you " ? :?
