Re: Dudley archives & BCLM event
I called in, learnt a few new things
1) The nicknames of the medals given to serving ww1 soldiers Pip , Squeak & ?
2) The Death Penny given to families of soldiers killed in action that had their name inscribed on the front. Had never heard or seen one of these
3) A medal given to soldier who had served but who may have been on leave through injury or reasons
This was given to stop strangers giving them a white feather.

Pip. Squeak & Wilfred were characters from a newspaper cartoon series run in the Daily Mirror and Sunday Pictorial, the three medals, Star, British & Victory, were nicknamed after them. Googling their images comes up with all sorts of copies of the cartoons, puzzles, annuals etc. as well as pictures of the medals.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.
