ARC..James SCOTT Esq. of Bloomhill
Hi,
I'm trying to work out who the parents of my 3rd great grandfather James SCOTT are. James SCOTT was born in 1799, though I do not know where. Burke's records would have me believe he was born in Broomhill ,FIFE, Scotland. What I do know is that he married an Eliza NEWTON in Co. Antrim 1820.
James SCOTT owned Bloomhill (different from Broomhill )in the parish of Tullyniskan, in the Barony of Dungannon, in the province of Ulster, in Co. Tyrone.
I have heard there are no census records from 1821-91 in this area, as they were burned or destroyed by the government. However, I recently came across James SCOTT's will. He died 06/05/1873 in Dungannon. The will also states that his eldest son Thomas Scott predeceased him. I am not sure if I am allowed to give the link to the source. The will mentions that he had a cousin called Thomas SCOTT Jr., residing in Rathfryland.
Other sons I know existed are: Robert William SCOTT m. Charlotte Pike, from whom I descend, Andrew Newton SCOTT, named in the will, and James Hamilton SCOTT.
James SCOTT might have been a J.P for Co. Tyrone.
If anyone could please help me discover James Scott of Bloomhill's parentage and where he, and his parents came from I would be most grateful as this problem has had me stumped for awhile.
James SCOTT's wife Eliza NEWTON was descended from the NEWTONs of Carrickfergus. This I know to be fact as in James SCOTT's will it mentions other descendants of the Carrickfergus NEWTONs. Eliza was born in 1898.
I am also struggling to find who her exact parents are as well, I think her father is most likely to be Henry NEWTON b.1779.
Please could someone also attempt to find whom Eliza's parents are, as this is another problem that has had me stumped.
Many thanks,
Ollie

Re: James SCOTT Esq. of Bloomhill
who were the witnesses at the marriage and at what church/parish
A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Good point, thanks. I'll look tomorrow to see.
I'm fairly sure it won't have his parents, I'd have noticed that, but it could still be useful.

The only certificate I can find has no witnesses, but thanks for the idea.
I have found and confirmed all the Newton connections though.

Hi. Have you seen this? A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of ..., Volume 2 By Sir Bernard Burke
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Ni4B ... on&f=false
I found it by Googling james scott bloomhill dungannon and looking in the books section.
It seems to say that Eliza was daughter of Andrew newton and Margaret Hamilton. The Henry you mention was first son and it looks as though Eliza was the youngest in the family, hard to be sure a she only gives the births of the boys

Re: James SCOTT Esq. of Bloomhill
I wonder if it is worth tracking down this book? http://books.google.is/books/about/The_ ... edir_esc=y
You said that James' will mentioned a cousin Thomas Scott jnr. That sort of implies that Thomas's father was also Thomas.
Thomas Scott who married Martha was born "born in 1804 near Rathfriland, County Down, Ireland, the son of George and Esther Swan Scott. "
http://74.93.6.90/athcgi/athweb.pl?a=m& ... vrps=&jw=1
If (if) this was James' brother then I guess that is his parents. Perhaps the book will say.
Looks like a very interesting extended family what with this guy http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/scott-a ... eorge-4546
Hope you get it sorted out.
http://sources.nli.ie/Record/MS_UR_070413 has some church records but a tad too late for your guy.

Re: James SCOTT Esq. of Bloomhill
Hi,
Thanks for looking into it, I had already worked out how Eliza fitted into the Newton family but thanks anyway.
On the Scott side I think you may have the wrong Scotts as it says Thomas Scott and his twelve children went to America. I also fail to see how this Andrew George Scott would be connected directly to the first Scott family you mentioned, it is most likely they were just different Scott familys.
However, it could be worth following up the Thomas Scott born in 1804, though it is unlikely to be the right one as his father is called George, so he would not be Jr.

Hang on, I see that I have dismissed this idea far to quickly, I shall look into it in greater detail over the next week.
Yet again thank you.
