ARC TBC - Margaret Fish, Born malta, british subject

Post by jimmy55 »

I've reached a point where my Great Grandmother ( living in Norfolk ) Margaret Drake( Nee Margaret Fish) appears on the 1891 Census as 'Birthplace Malta ..British Subject'.
Any ideas if that means she was a Maltese national or would she be daughter of a serving British Soldier ( not sure if we had a base there in this period? ) Any suggestions how I could make progress to find out more would be welcome. Cheers, jim

Thanks mallosa ....yes I do have that one and quite a lot on the Drakes further back. Margaret is my dead end.
I'm trying to make up my mind if she a daughter born abroad or of Maltese descent. Fish doesn't sound very Maltese and there seems to be quite a few Fish in Norfolk ( not just the sea surrounding ) so I wondered if her father was a returning serviceman with a Maltese wife? All the best, jim

Hi
Yes, Malta would have had a lot of of British military around then.
If you could buy the wedding certificate for Margaret then you should know her father's name and occupation (if he was alive when she married). Then you could hunt for him in the census or army records if he was in the army. Her mother may have been British too, it would not be unusual for wives to go out with their husbands. Soldiers tended to collect wives all over the place though, a lot were posted to Ireland and married Irish girls, you can never tell.
I think the wedding certificate is the only lead you have, unless another Fish relative turns up in the latter censuses?

On both the 1901 and 1911 Census it states her place of birth as just Norwich :?
