ARC TBC - Grandfather's first marriage

Post by macca16 »

Hi,
I am trying to trace my grandfather's first marriage certificate with no luck, on the 1911 census he is living in Worsley Lancashire with his wife and 2 children, the only thing is that his age is different from what it should be but it is definitely him
Finlay McMillan born in Colonsay 1881 his mother was Margaret McMillan, no father listed he died in kent in 1952.
His wife is Helen Stewart born in Dumbarton, she is listed as being 24 which would give a birth year of about 1887. Looking for Helen all the Helen Stewarts that are born around those years are still living with their parents on the 1911 census records.
I know she died in 1931 as I have a copy of her death certificate ( this may be a dumb question but here goes  ) Can you link a death certificate to someone's birth certificate therefore you then know it is the same person.
On the 1911 census it states that they have been married for 4 whole years so that would give the marriage year as 1906-7 but I cannot find any record of Finlay McMillan marrying Helen Stewart
Please help :-)

Steve.

Hi, Thanks but I have this info, I've lost track of them after 1911 census as they were half brothers to my father and a lot older so it would be good to know where they ended up and what happened in their lives.

Hi
Did Finlay fight in WW1 at all? Do you have any service records for him?

So, Helen died in 1931 - where was that? Who informed for the death?

I have his WW1 service medal
Helen died on the 26th September aged 45 in Luton Bedfordshire in 1931, the informant was their eldest son Alexander. I have a copy of her death certificate.
As I asked in an ealier post can the death certificate help find a birth record??

No is the answer. The two types of certificates are not connected in any direct way.

I wondered if the service records might have any information regarding the wedding date.

Great information there, thanks for that. That is him as I have checked the Regimental numbers I have.
Finlay McMillan worked on the Ellesmere Estate as a gamekeeper in 1911 and lived in a house called "The Aviary" Worsley which I assume was part of the estate.
Its a shame it doesn't say where the groceries were sent in January 1918 as I believe he was sent to the Cirencester area for convalescence after he was invalided out of the army. I know he was in that area in 1922 as they had another son born Kenneth Finlay McMillan, 21 May 1922, they then moved again to Luton in Bedfordshire between 1922 and 1931 where Helen died at the age of 45. He re-married the following year (1932) to Wilhelmina Buggins who he employed as a house keeper and they had 2 children one of which is my father.

I also have this certificate that was presented to him if anyone could shed any light on what this was about.
I think Orsley Review at the bottom of the page should read Worsley Review.

They must have been getting ready for the war.

"Official programme of the Royal review of the East Lancashire Territorial Forces at Worsley" is held in an archive, or seems to be listed at rather a high price here:
