Register Office Marriages Query

Post by mumbles »

Adding this David Brooks

http://www.bcconnections.tribalpages.co ... =790142210

and noticed connections to Lavender/Harper/Wilson/Woodhouse families
but strangely all families seem to marry at Stourbridge Register Office and not Church !!

Is it because they were married at Independent Chapels and marriage had to be registered or some other reason. I have not found this before

Some of my family married in Register Offices because they were Unitarians ,they seem to have had their marriage blessed at their church ,and then gone to the Register office where the minister also signed the register

From the Marriage Act 1753 until 1837, only marriages conducted by the Church of England, by Quakers, or Jewish marriages, were recognised in England and Wales. This was changed by the Marriage Act 1836 which, in addition to introducing civil marriage, also allowed ministers of other faiths (Nonconformists and Roman Catholics) to act as registrars. The civil marriage law was superseded by the Marriage Act 1949.

these might help

Thanks Peterd
I think you have it right as most of these Stourbridge Register Office marriages were in Lye and I have found one has been researched further and was in Independent Chapel and then registered in Stourbridge.
It just goes to show that it is possible to obtain further details about a marriage eve from Register Office.
