Hello I am Andrew and I am an addict.
YEs I have this terrible addiction, its ruining my life, it controls me, I struggle with it daily, I cant get enough.
I am addicted to transcription work.
There I said it, that was difficult to admit to.
300 entries an hour if I can clearly read the handwriting, average 2,000 per day, another 220,000 needed to complete Sussex, 110 days... I can do this .. I can... I CAN!

Hit a Brickwall? Have you lost all trace of someone? Do not despair, simply make a note they were abducted by aliens! Don't believe in aliens? No problem, just write them off as having disapeared in a time portal

Oh dear.
Perhaps there's a group you could join Transcripts Anonymous!! Have you discussed it with your GP? ( thats what they say on Doctors).

All I can say is well done! Your addiction unlike many, does actually help others!
And anyway aren't all of us genalogists sort of addicts, or maybe it's OCD we have!

Why don’t you start transcribing for FreeREG Andrew?
Please don’t take this the wrong way, but personally, I don’t see the point of transcribing census info when it’s available online, albeit we have to pay. In any hobby, money is involved.
Just my opinion.

Free Cen, Free Reg, Free BMD are all fantastic tools, Ive done for all and help admin a long while back with free reg. People thought it was no go and has proved its worth.
If you have transcribed any of them its your own so can be placed on any site.
I think its brilliant for things to be "free" but they do need something to keep the records preserved.
Well done you and all transcribers doing thier bit!
Jo

And a widely held one, but we have already paid for it out of our taxes, the genealogy sites paid very little to get the government out of a hole (they have a duty to provide the information in a readily available form) and those sites, none of which pay any taxes in this country, now make massive profits out of the info we British taxpayers have provided.BC Wench wrote:Why don’t you start transcribing for FreeREG Andrew?

Some valid comments regarding this already made. Church of Latter Day Saints familysearch.org provide a free search, but the results are limited, in that only individual records are returned with no option to see other members of housholds etc, which you then invited to go to FindMyPast and yes, pay money for the privilege. Ancestry profits are obscene, yet they dont seem to want to address the poor transcription accuracy, less money for the board and share holders I guess.
Providing things for free is what makes the internet great. Look at all the open source projects providing 100% free software which rivals commercial software. In the same spirit giving people the chance to access archives for free is a noble cause and will help break the monopoly and greed of profit driven attitudes of the commerical sites.
I also know for a fact that my transcription work, and indeed the transcriptions made by other volunteers for Sussex Online Parish Clerks, is miles more accurate than ancestry. Therefore giving people the option to look at census returns for free which are more accurate than the paid sites is not a waste of time.
