Mallin family bible
I have a bible that belonged to William Mallin of West Bromwich (1772-1855) which contains some information that might be of interest to people researching this Black Country family.
The bible is a folio printed in Birmingham by Boden and Adams in 1769, before William was born, but it is inscribed "Wm Mallin, His Book, 1804". It contains the birth records of William's family and of his father Isaac's family. One page also contains the inscription "1821 Sept 25: The first stone of Christ Church Westbromwich was laid by the Earl of Dartmouth".
One page has this information:
Isaac and Sarah Mallin's Family
Wm Mallin, His Book, born May 25, 1772
His Brother Saml, born Decmbr 10, 1773
His Sister Phaeny, born Febuy 24, 1776
His Brother Samul, born Septr 29, 1778
His Sister Mary, born June 22, 1781
Another page has the following:
The Family of Will. Mallin
He Wm Mallin Born May 25, 1772
His Wife Elisabeth Mallin Born July 17, 1775
Hannah Mallin Born Aug 14, 1797
Sarah Mallin Born May 13, 1799
Saml Mallin Born Sept 1, 1800
Harriot Mallin Born Decembr 16, 1802
Wm Mallin Born Jany 13, 1806
Isaac Mallin Born March 22, 1807
Wm Mallin Born March 16, 1811
Hannah Mallin Born April 30, 1813
Emala Mallin Born Aug 30, 1815 [ the day of Emala's birth is unclear ]
The bible also contains two small prints. One is of William IV wearing what could be a Royal Navy uniform. My guess is that it dates from the occasion of his coronation in 1830. The inscription on this print reads "The Proprietors of the Weekly Dispatch present this portrait of his majesty William the IVth to their numerous subscribers". The other print is about the size of a postcard and is of "Dudley Castle, South East View, Drawn on stone by E. Bissell" and published by the lithographer Thomas Underwood of Birmingham. Edward Bissell was active in West Bromwich and died in 1846.
A third item that was found in the bible was a poem which was untitled, and written by hand. I researched it and found that it is the first 5 verses of a longer poem of 23 verses called "The Orphans". According to the literary journal "Notes and Queries" (5th series, vol. 2, 1874, pp 173-174), this poem was written by Samuel Roberts of Sheffield, who sent it to James Montgomery, editor of the Sheffield Iris newspaper. It was first published in November of 1804 (coincidentally, the year William Mallin dated his bible). It is a very sad poem.
William's second son named William married Hannah Abel. One of their daughters was Sarah Mallin, who married John Brayden in 1854. Their first child was William Henry Braden, who was my g-g-grandfather. William Henry emigrated to the US and lived in New Castle, Pennsylvania. Somehow he ended up with the bible, and it has come down through the Braden family to me.
I have collected much information about this particular Mallin family, and the Braden family, over the years, if anybody is interested. But I have not found any marriage record for the William and Elisabeth Mallin who owned this bible, so I don't know her maiden name or what parish she was from. Their children were all baptised in All Saints church in West Bromwich. I think Elisabeth died in 1842 and was buried at Christ Church.
best wishes,
Dale Braden

Re: Mallin family bible
Hi and thank you for posting this information.
How lovely to have a family Bible.
I can add his name to the Black Country Connections tree
http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/
would you like me to put your name in the notes that you connect to them
and then if anyone also connects they can contact you via this forum?
We are using on the tree for ease of searching Mallen not Mallin but can add a note as to spelling.

Yes, I think this is the right census record. I think that's "Sams Lane", which ran west off of Spon Lane. And William Samuel Fletcher Moss married their daughter Emily in 1838 in Christ Church, West Bromwich. I think the 1851 census record that you posted is also right. By that time Elizabeth had died.
I have not followed their son Isaac's line forward, but your census records seem reasonable. Isaac's younger brother William was also a glass maker.
What I would really like to find is the marriage record for William and Elizabeth. I really expected it to be in the registers of All Saints, West Bromwich, but I could not find it there, nor anywhere in the IGI or any other marriage collection that I have checked, for anywhere in England. William's bible tells us that his parents were Isaac and Sarah, and I did find a marriage in All Saints for Isaac Mallin and Sarah Firme on 7 August 1768, four years before William was born. Does anyone have access to the Bishop's Transcripts for the diocese of Lichfield? Is it possible that the marriage of William and Elizabeth made it into the BTs but not the parish registers? I know that the BTs were supposed to have been copied from the PRs, but I have read that sometimes the former actually contain more information.
