ARC TBC - Joseph Bowater

This is my latest Brick Wall.Joseph Bowater was born in Rowley Regis in about 1846, son of Samuel and Sarah(nee Ruston). He married Maria Eliza Yates 2 Sept 1867 at Quinton. In December 1870 she re-married John Bird, and was a widow on the certificate. So he must have died between 1867 and December 1870. I can't find any record of his death after extensive searching.
Any ideas? Help!

Both marriages are on ancestry. Can't find a death either - the only one that comes up is from 1st quarter 1866, so before your Joseph married! I've checked the probate records too, and burials. Generally I've not had as much luck with burials as with christenings/baptisms and marriages. I suspect the records aren't as complete.
I have found a mention in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph from 1st July 1869. It states that there was an accident at the Whiteheath Colliary near Oldbury on the 28th June, where two men were killed and several injured. It seems they were buried when a load of coal fell on them. The alarm was raised straight away, and four men were dug out. Two of the four were dead, one being a Joseph Bowater, 22, married residing at Cakemoor, a bandsman. It seems that the pit, or maybe the part where the accident was, was known as "The Pressure".

I wonder if it's a mistranscription as far as the death record goes.
If you'd like the certificate you could try ordering just with the info you have, if they can't find it then the GRO refund the money.
