Thanks both.
Linell, whereabouts is Furnace Lane? Google gives me a place in Halesowen, but I thought the ironworks was on Corngreaves Road.

Re: FMP lookup please James Hingley
Hi SRD I'm afraid Furnace Lane is long gone, it ran somewhere from Lomey Town and round the back of Corngreaves on to Cradley. Yes there is a Furnace Lane/Hill in Halesowen, totally different place. Lomey Town ran down from 5 Ways Cradley Heath, so all the old Hingley addresses were near each other, have these notes on James 1766:-
The precise nature of James’ employment status is not obvious. On many occasions he is referred to as a chainmaker, on others he is a chain manufacturer. The former might indicate that he actually made chains over an anvil, the latter that he employed people to make chains for him. At the time of his death he had horses, cows and husbandry (farming) implements to dispose of, in addition to a (chainmaking) shop, but appeared to have lived in a house without an attached workshop. In the mid-1790’s he was living on Furnace Lane, Rowley Regis Staffs. By the late 1790’s he stated that he was variously living at Cradley Heath, Cradley Bridge and Rowley. These were probably all descriptions of the place. He was in Haden Hill by 1812. His father’s will of 1822 granted James a meadow on Cradley Heath and a messuage, tenement and shop (probably a chainmaking workshop) on Lawrence Lane.

Re: FMP lookup please James Hingley
I note from the 1841 census that his house must have been a bit of a landmark:linell wrote:Hi SRD I'm afraid Furnace Lane is long gone, it ran somewhere from Lomey Town and round the back of Corngreaves on to Cradley. From Jeremiah Billingham "Salutation Inn" to Cradley Old Forge then back to Lomey Town, thece to Scholding Green to the Parish Boundaries, thence to Five Ways (including two houses at Pargeter and Darbys Colliery) from Five Ways to Daniel Graingers Lodge house on both sides thence to Tibbetts Garden and James Hingleys house, then turning round to William John Garratts, taking that side of the Road only, including "Beggars Row" up to Richard Nocks "Beer Shop" ---
I wonder if it could be traced on an old map?

If you go to this web address which is from Dudley Archives web site, “Historic Mapping”
http://gismo.dudley.gov.uk/public/histo ... scale=5000
you will see Halesowen. Click on 1st Edition circa 1880s under “Data Available” on the left hand side. Then in the Location box above, type in Furnace Lane. You can zoom in and out, pan etc by using the boxes on the right hand side and use different years.

That's interesting so by 1841 James had moved up the road to somewhere near Tibbetts Gardens, which would have been known locally as 5 Ways. Furnace Lane was at the bottom of Lomey Town now known as Lower High Street, think Furnace Lane ran off Forge Lane which ran behind Corngreaves Iron Works on the Cradley side next to the River Stour.

Re: FMP lookup please James Hingley
I think the 1841 census shows them living in the same premises as their daughter & son-in-law, maybe they'd bought a property for that family, or maybe it had come to the family on the marriage.
The Will I mentioned in the PM gives a whole load of parcels of land passed on to his children which may help pinpoint the property more closely. I see from BCC that James' father was a property owner too, I don't have that will but maybe James' property 'empire' grew from his inheritance from his father.
