Hi Adrian, Thanks so very much for your information and efforts! As to Jack T. Sr. , serving in Egypt, most of the information is anecdotal from old conversations with him,,, ( The only time I could get him talking about WW1 was when he had overindulged a bit with beer) He had few kind things to say about Allenby, camels, and the initial actions against the "Turkmen". A medical fact was that he did have malaria ( anecdotaly aquired in Mesopotemia ) and We have a letter written by my grandmother to her brother, ( Rev, Harold Twyford) mentioning that Jack T. Sr. had been treated for malaria in a hospital in a place called "mudros or something like that". We do know for certain that he did finish out the war in Italy with the Warwickshires
Again Adrian As they say in this part of Texas, Muchos gracias por sus tiempo e' trabajo.

Hi Jack,

Glad to have helped a little and in Finnish I would like to say 'ole hyvaa'.

The information you have received about Egypt etc shows Jack did indeed serve there but I'm blown if I can find the information.

I'll try to dig deeper and if I find out anymore info' I'll let you know.

Mudros is a port town on a small Greek Island called Lemnos that was used by the Allies during the Gallipoli and Mesopotemia Campaigns to transport supplies and soldiers but was also a hospital base for wounded soldiers. The peace treaty with the Ottoman Empire was also signed at Mudros.

What a fantastic story you posted about Jack seemed a real charactor.

All the best
Adrian

Hi Adrian

I have just retourned from France & Belgium, & visited the Le Touret Memorial where my grandfather is commemorated, and Ieper. The number of names at both Le Touret, & the Menin Memorial in Ieper, really brings home the great losses!.

Please can you give me any information about the battle my grandfather died in etc.

His name & details are
Herbert Thomas Beard
Private 9291
1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment
died 16.3.1915
F & F

He died aged 42, and left a widow and 6 children, my mother being 19 months old when he was killed.

Many thanks
Mel

Hi Mel,

I've managed to find Herbert's service records and I will with pleasure post all the information. I've managed to from the service records find information on the place where Herbert was sadly killed which is very rare to find on the documents.

I'm just wondering out of respect because some of the information contained is about his death etc would you want me to post private or on the general board.

It may take a little while to work through but I promise to get you the information and I'll wait to hear from you.

I'm so glad you had chance to visit France and Belgium to pay your families respect, I have a number of relatives who died in France and I will be going to pay mine soon.

Kind regards
Adrian

Hi Adrian
Thank you so much. Please could you post privately for me when you have the time. I'm extremely grateful as I didn't have any information about my grandfather, prior to my mother's death, except that I knew he had died in WW1.
I found it very moving to see the memorials, and see where my grandfather is remembered, and can now understand how my mother found it so difficult to talk about. I plan to return & spend more time around Ypres & visit the museums & do the tours around the fields of Flanders. I hope you get as much from it when you visit.
Thank you again, in advance, for the information.
Kind regards
Mel

Adrian.

I have inherited compass/range instrument with inscription Captian A J Hook (or R J Hook) R.A. 1917.

Any information from records would be very useful.

Thanks.

Fixer.
