Made Up Names

Post by AndrewA »

Have you come across any strange or made up names? I have come across three women called Lucaiser in 1841 census, Sussex, Funtington District 2 folio 26. I did some work for Linvoy Primus charity Faith and Football a while ago. He told me his father made up the name Linvoy.

So what other names have you come across that are just about unique and appear to be made up.
Hit a Brickwall? Have you lost all trace of someone? Do not despair, simply make a note they were abducted by aliens! Don't believe in aliens? No problem, just write them off as having disapeared in a time portal

Both my paternal grandparents were born in Lye, where there seemed to be a tradition of using military ranks and other titles as Christian names. For example: my grandfather attended a school where the headmaster was Major Pardoe - Major being his name rather than his rank. I also have several Squire's / Esquire's in the family - again, their name rather than social rank.

My great grandfather's name was Enos. He was named after his uncle but I have no idea where the name originates from. I also have a distant cousin named Edwin Dalphon Robins who (according to his obituary) was known as 'Dalph'. His sister, Clarissa, married Elisheus Timothy Cartwright, who had a brother named Centre Cartwright.

Just come across a woman called Hedgie, although one census has her as Heggie. At first I thourght it was a mistranscription, but even BMD agrees! That's a new one on me!

I suspect Elisheus is a mis-spelling of Aloysius.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.

I've got a couple of Enos in my tree. Apparently it's a biblical name.

I've not long transcribed a first name OUR MARY which I think is so beautiful.

I've got Enos too, and Neri. They are both biblical.
