a) John Lovell was killed on 27/2/1894 by single blow to head in fight at a Dudley Pub.( Old Inn Eve Hill Dudley)
John Lovell was married to an Elizabeth Shaw
His attacker Henry Arnold was convicted of manslaughter and given 6 months hard labour
b) John Lovell had daughter Epselina Lovell born 1877 who married Robert Henry Wood ( a paviour born Manchester)
They had children Joseph Harold Wood, Robert , Elizabeth
c) Joseph and Robert Wood married two sisters Olive and Gladys Cotterill
d) Elizabeth Wood married a Fred Cherrington
Should be possible to trace all of these

“The Dudley Manslaughter Case ….. inquiry at Town Hall ….. respect to death of John Lovell (41),
lodging house keeper who died on the previous Thursday [27th December] immediately after
receiving a blow from Henry Arnold (31), hawker of Eve Hill ….. Mr.W. H. Thompson watched the
case on behalf of Mr. Enoch Beardsmore of the OLD INN, Eve Hill, where the fatal affray took place
….. Arnold had been ejected from Lovell’s house after using bad language ….. Lovell was attacked
by Arnold, whilst sitting in an armchair. Arnold struck him once on the left side of the head …..
Arnold remanded for trial at Worcester.”
- He was found guilty of manslaughter, and given 6 months hard labour, in February 1895.
Dudley Herald 14/2/1903
“…..the room of an adjoining cottage had been incorporated in the licensed premises without
permission.”
Joseph Stone was also a brewer. [1914], [1921], [1930]
The licence renewal was refused on 3rd August 1984.
Closed.
It was converted into a Chinese take away restaurant.

Looked on 1891,1901,1911 Census and it appears 78 & 79 Eve Hill Wolverhampton Street were run by same family the Lovells and 79 was family home and 78 was boarding house
