I have someone in my family in the 1950's who married his girlfriend, but her father wouldn't let them live together. They are apart for four years on the electoral register.

It might not be odd.
Is it possible that John Thomas was born just before the marriage? So his surname was open to confusion. The census only shows where people were on one night and perhaps his mother was expecting a second baby and had gone hope to her mother for a while. Meanwhile John Thomas snr was at his parents. Come the 1891 they are all together and on BCC it says John T H Parsons where the H is perhaps a way of sticking in his Hill name.

Marriage was in 1878 three years before 1881 Census when they live apart

Yes I know. What I am suggesting is that they may just not have been in the same house on the night of the 1881 census. They are together in 1891 aren't they?
The census is a snapshot. Perhaps Abigail went home to help her mother out? Her mother could have been sick and been unable to care for her family. Or Abigail herself could have been tired from a second pregnancy and went home to mum while her husband went to his parents. Or the young couple could have been between rentals and so split up for a few days while a new home was sorted out. There are heaps of reasons why they may have been apart. I know that John is down as unmarried in 1881 but given that his father would have filled in the census form that means nothing. My father was doing well if he could remember which year I was born!
