Dentists

Post by Northern Lass »

I hate going to the Dentist but what I want to know is why do they
make you wear those stupid goggles! and why do they wear them too?

And when you have an xray how come they belt it out of the room yet you stay in
without any protective clothing on! :o

And another thing why don't they probe around any more with that fish hook instrument
just tap the tooth!

And another thing....why do they try and talk to you when you have your mouth wide open and
worse still when they are drilling, or you have a numb mouth from injection and you try and talk
and dribble everywhere!!
They aren't interested in talking about Genealogy anyway ......I tried

They wear those goggles to prevent any poison from your mouth going in their eyes...could be fatal !!!!!!!

I was at the dentist yesterday and had a molar removed. It took two nurses to hold my head still and him pulling and twisting for five minutes before it popped out.

There are two type of goggles they will offer you.

The clear ones are simply to prevent the liquid and tooth fragments from ending up in your eye and giving you an infection.

If they are doing extended work with the bright lights they will offer a dark pair to protect your eyes.

It took me years to find a good dentist and I have used the same one for the last 25.

When they take an x-ray they should put a lead vest over the top of you.

The X-Ray radiation is not dangerous to you as you only get the occasional one.

IF they remained in the room for every x-ray done they would be glowing in the dark and having three headed babies.

Don't know about the goggles.

As far as the x-rays go, you're only there once in a blue moon (hopefully), and the x-ray tube is well protected so the x-rays only come out where they're supposed to. Therefore no need of a lead apron - no legal requirement either, especially as the doses are so low. The only "bits" that need to be protected are your gonads (reproductive bits) if they're in the firing line, or if you're assisting someone (e.g a parent holding a child) you'll be given a lead apron. The dentist (or radiographer) is doing x-rays every day of their working life so they do need to get out the way, as they'll get an accumulative dose.

What people don't think about is when they're in aeroplanes, especially long haul!!!

I am quite happy to have the complimentary lead apron thank you. I am sure the machine is tested and certified every so often but I would rather be safe than sorry.

My dentist has just replaced the old lead apron with something like a rigid bib which sticks up in the air instead of lying flat on the chest. He said it was pretty expensive so he hoped that it worked
