I have only just seen your post about the Ashmore family, my mother is a daughter of Annie May Ashmore she knew of Nellie and that she died young but nothing more it seems her mother didn't talk about Nellie. If you send me a pm I can share some information about the smiley and hopefully fill in some gaps.

peterd wrote:and the Ashmore family appears to have 'surrendered' the child Mary Ellen/Nellie to the family of my grandfather Bertie Davies

is bertie, albert father proper name ? any census on albert ?

as if bertie and eli are related this might be the reason why mary ellen was given over as eli wife was an ashmore and able to keep an eye on her ?

looks like this is a good possibility why the ashmore gave in easily ?

Hi,
Yes please my great grandparents are John Ashmore and Isabella Baker,
My grandparents are Annie May Ashmore who married Joseph Jones.

I am not able to access my information at the moment but as soon as I can I will see what certificates I have.

Briefly back online before returning mother to rehab unit .... this all looks really relevant (have not yet had time to study it properly though), thanks to all who have answered ... Looking through the earlier posts this afternoon, I too was struck by the Eli Davi(e)s/Susan Ashmore marriage, and puzzled to work it out in relation to the rest. I was also very struck by Susan's 12 children, five having died in the 28 years they were married. Would like to know more about this, will try to contact the Davies family member who is interested in genealogy, to see if she can solve the puzzle, or knows what happened to the five children who died young.

I probably have answers to some of the queries raised in recent posts by other members, but will have to answer when I have more time (have to cook a birthday meal when I return from taking Mum back to rehab....

Thanks again to all correspondents, really great to receive such a response.

I agree - brilliant and then some! I could never have hoped for a 'new' cousin for my 97-year-old mother, long-lost relatives for both of us (and my children), as well as for Nessa and her Mum, and a wide-open window into Ashmore-Davies family history. Now, what to do about the Day family?! Only joking .... for now!

Thank you everyone, you are all stars!
