Ashmore family from Stourbridge 1850s on

Post by moreash »

Looking for information for 97-year-old mother (and myself, husband and children) about the family my mother has never known because her own mother (Nellie Ashmore) died in 1916, 6 months after the birth of my mother (then Mary Ellen Davies) in January 1916, and the Ashmore family appears to have 'surrendered' the child Mary Ellen/Nellie to the family of my grandfather Bertie Davies. I have little to go on, just a death certificate for my grandmother Nellie Davies, dated 1916, and a list of the names and ages of the Ashmore family living at '16 Delph' at the time of the 1901 census: parents John Ashmore (age 39) and Bella Ashmore (birth name Isabella; age 38), sons John Ashmore (age 15) , Thomas Ashmore (age 13), William Ashmore (age 11), Albert Ashmore (age 9), and daughters Nellie Ashmore (my grandmother, age 7), Phoebe Jane Ashmore (age 5) and Annie May Ashmore (age 8 months). It seems likely from web research that Bella Ashmore died in Stourbridge in 1914; it is possible, but by no means certain, that her maiden name was Baker (Isabella Baker, born in 1862, Kingswinford). I believe the Ashmore siblings (John, Thomas, William, Albert, Phoebe and Annie) all married in Stourbridge, between ?1911 and 1926, but I have no information about their wives or families. Any assistance would be most welcome.

Thank you for incredibly rapid response and for pushing back to 1891 census and marriage of John Ashmore and Isabella Baker. This is a great start to my postings on the genealogy forum, just hope someone out there might be able to identfuy some Ashmores descended from the siblings who lived in Delph in 1901 .... My mother (97, suffering from severe short-term memory loss) has just remembered an Uncle Billy from Brierley Hill (must be the William who was 11 in 1901), with two sons, Alfred and ?Billy); she can also recall visits to her aunts Phoebe and Annie when she herself was a child.

is bertie, albert father proper name ? any census on albert ?

as if bertie and eli are related this might be the reason why mary ellen was given over as eli wife was an ashmore and able to keep an eye on her ?

There is actually more info on the davies family than on the Ashmores, the Davies research having been carried out by a Davies relative .... Albert davies's father was William Davies, and he married Mary-Ann Carpenter in Stourbridge in 1889. William davies's father was Joseph davies (born 1840), he married Margaret ?. Joseph's father was Eli Davies, who married Esther Stevens in Dudley at St Thomas on 27.08.1834. They too lived in Brettell Lane .... So far, I have not seen a 'Susan' in the information I have ....

Just to add in another name, my grandfather Albert davies remarried in 1921, to one Florriw Pearson .....
