Died of disease. Looks like he had kidney stones that ended up perforating his kidney and/or bowel. "Discharge fecal matter from wound" is in the medical report.

Looks like he went to the Northfield hospital due to bronchitis and the kidney stones became a problem once there.

A list of English relatives and their relationship who attended his funeral is included with the records.

Not a kidney stone but an infection of the urinary track that can cause a perinephric abscess.

This abscess is what burst and caused the leaking of fecal matter which then led to a deadly infection.

Apparently this is a very hard thing to diagnose even today.

His medical report says he has a scan from an earlier operation so I wonder if it is associated.

Very painful! These days we do a CT scan, but as you say not always 100% conclusive. If there is free air in the abdominal cavity (air is normally confined to the bowel) - it's straight to theatre. If no definate diagnosis they may operate anyway.
Wonder what the scan you mention was? X-ray was available (but maybe not widely, as x-rays were only discovered in 1895) but there was no ultrasound, CT or MRI then.
Do you mean scar, rather than scan?
