*Archived- pend more info at later date*-Spittle and Brookes

Post by mumbles »

I am researching a family called Spittle ( there is only one on Bcc) and found them in Newport Monmouth from 1841 and they became Iron Founders employing 200 men and lived in a mansion called Cambrian House in 1881. Thomas Spittle born 1806 was born in Rowley Regis and he married an Esther Brookes on 18/7/1824 at Kingswinford, Staffs. Three of their children John Spittle, born 1833 , Rosannah born 1830 and Joseph born 1837 were born also in Rowley Regis ( although in 1851 Census are shown as born Brickheath ,Staffs. or Bretherton , Worcs. which are obviously Netherton and Blackheath) Later Census records show as born Rowley Regis. A Spittle descendant born 1868 then married a Vicar and a further descendant born 1895 then married a Surgeon and lived in a big house with servants in Cheshire.
What I want to do is connect the Spittle already on Bcc to this family who came from Rowley Regis pre 1841 Census as simple Iron Moulders and did well for themselves. I also want to find if any connect Esther Brookes and my main Brookes line.
I have found quite a few Spittle surnamed people from Rowley and a lot moved to South Wales but some remained behind .Note most found on RR records of 1813 to 1849 are elderly.

Thanks for help on this.I have now traced Spittle family from Rowley Regis where they were the usual Nailmakers and Iron Moulders to South Wales where they migrated to in 1830's and became owners and managers of a Cambrian Foundry in Newport employing 200 men.
Following is obituary of Tom Spittle whose father was Thomas Spittle who married Esther Brookes and was born in Rowley Regis. As you can see family had become very wealthy.
Merlin. 25th November, 1881
Mr. Thomas Spittle
In the last few days there has been announced the death of a gentleman who was well known and generally respected in local circles, and who had, for a long period, been connected with the trade of this town. Mr. Thomas Spittle of the Cambrian Foundry, died at his residence Cambrian House, Maindee, about half past nine on Saturday evening. Deceased had been for some years subject to attacks of gout and these were sometimes sharp and protracted. We believe, that Mr. Spittle was possessed of considerable wealth. He was for a few years a member of the Town Council but never took a prominent part in municipal affairs. He was in his 76th year and will be buried in the family vault at Pontypool.
I have not found anything about Esther Brookes yet

Hi Peterd,
I am in last stages of researching Spittle connection and intend to put on bcc when I have completed.
I have now found that Thomas Spittle born 1806 RR who married Esther Brookes had 7 siblings born in RR and his father was Thomas Spittle born 1777 and Rosanna Adams born Birmingham their parents were Joseph & Rebecca Spitel of Enville Staffs. As well as Thomas born 1777 Joseph & Rebecca had 7 other children born staffs.
I have managed to obtain a booklet from Gwent Local History which has 20 or so pages on the Spittle family including a family tree and it details the history of the Spittle family from Enville and Kingswinford and RR who were Carpenters, Nail Makers, and Pattern Makers and Iron Moulders. They nearly all moved to South Wales in 1820-1833 period and Thomas Spittle born 1806 became the "Iron King of Newport" . Thomas became very wealthy and founded the Cambrian Iron Foundry living in a vast Mansion called Cambrian House which still exists today in Newport.
Some research has been done into Spittles of Enville who were there in 1300 and gave names to local priests , husbandmen ,yeoman farmers and estate baliffs to the Strang(e)ways and Wrottesley families. As powers of Landlords grew and development of estates occurred Spittles then emigrated to Wednesbury , Albrighton, Old Swinford and Kingswinford and RR.
I have also tracked Spittle family from South Wales to Cheshire and a connection to Lord of three manors in Wistanstow, Whittingson and Cheney Longville in Shropshire
I have still not found Esther Brookes

Just noticed that someone has put a Mary Spittle born 1782 on Bcc and I have a Mary Spittle born 1782 ? .Wonder if same family ?
Joseph & Rebecca Spitel of Enville Staffs. had children as follows:-
John born c.1775
Thomas born c. 1777 who married Rosanna Adams
Amy born c. 1780
Mary born c. 1782
William born 1785 died 1851
Ann born c. 1789
Benjamin born c. 1792
Samuel born c. 1800 ( baptised Kingswinford) but on 1851 Census is shown as born Blaru Eniforor Which could be Black Country Census Assessor for Blaenavon in Monmouthshire

Benjamin, John, & William all ended up in South Wales as Carpenters but Thomas remained behind and became a Pattern Maker in Iron Industry. His son Thomas born 1806 RR did not go there until c. 1833 and when he grew rich he employed his relatives in The Cambrian Foundry.

Thomas born c. 1777 was father of Thomas born 1806 RR who married Esther Brookes and moved to Wales
