George Samuel Clifton is the son of Harriet Clifton. He was born on 28 Feb 1841 before Harriet married Philip Stackhouse. He was baptised on the 18th April 1841, the child of Harriet Clifton. In 1871 he is living with his grandmother Elizabeth Clifton - at 187 Dudley Port, Tipton. His age is given on the census as 20, but he is in fact 30.

1881 : Aged 40 - Living at 37 North Street, Wolverhampton - Butcher (Also in the house is Visitor Florry Tector - Aged 4. There is a Florence G Tector in 1891 in Wolverhampton - with parents Thomas and Priscilla. There is a Thomas Tector marrying Priscilla Hancox - Susan's sister? in 1866 - All Saints, West Bromwich)

He married Susan Hancox in 1873 in Wolverhampton

1891 : Aged 50 - Living at 216 Dudley Road, Wolverhampton - Butcher (Also in the house Housekeeper Emma Hancox - Aged 50 - Possibly the sister of Susan)

He is mentioned in the Will of Philip Stackhouse, who always treated him as his son.

Sorry NL - Never did get that marriage. It's not on the Wolverhampton Indexes.

Don't think Philip was his father though - his first wife Sarah Vale didn't die until 1847. (Incidentally, hers was one of the biggest grave stones in St Martins, Tipton - keep meaning to go and have a look if it is with the others that were removed from the churchyard).

Philip Stackhouse was very well respected in Tipton and although he was just a newpaper shopkeeper, and blind, he amassed quite a fortune, owning houses and a couple of mines in Tipton. His will is five pages long, and he names George Clifton right at the beginning as his friend. Thomas Nicholls is also mentioned in the will as the husband of Elizabeth.

I have done loads of work on the Stackhouse family over the last ten years, just haven't got around to adding it to the BCC tree. Harriet (1881), the granddaughter of Philip Stackhouse and Sarah Vale married George Henry Humphries, the brother of my Gr Grandmother Rebecca Humphries, Harriet was also blind - must have been genetic. Their son Joe married my dad's sister, so we are very closely knitted. My uncle Joe used to say that although his mom was blind - she could still hit his dad on the head with a stone at 20 paces if he was winding her up.
