Great Barr Hall

Post by snoopysue »

Anyone know where I could find out more info about the hall, but more importantly about people who worked for the Scott family on the estate.
We're supposed to have someone in the family who worked on the estate as a gamekeeper - there is a possible but the birth dates are a bit iffy, and the person concerned was a wheelwright/ carpenter. The occupation does match up with the known occupation of this individual.

Have you tried looking in the Quarter Sessions records? Licences to carry guns were granted at Quarter Sessions so the records for some counties include lists of gamekeepers.

I haven't tried those, but there doesn't seem to be a gamekeeper with any surname connected with that part of the family on any of the census's. I suspect that the carpenter/wheelwright is the only contender.
I'm checking with my mums cousin to find out more particulars about the person; my mum only knew it was one of her gr grandfathers. Only one of their gr grandfathers seems to disapear off the census "radar", and I only have one census for him and no death certificate. He also appears to have remarried, and I need to investigate a possible death of his first wife. The waters are muddied further by a possible move from Birmingham to Great Barr and later West Bromwich.
Both my mum and her cousin knew the story, but as their mothers were sisters, the source of this story could be the same! It may just have been a tall story, or one embroidered for posterity!

Can't seem to find quarterly sessions for Great Barr after 1831 - this is too early as I know my chap was in Birmingham at this time.
