I have seen this one on freeBMD, and WestMidsBMD, but it seems a little too late for some reason, and it's a Sedgley record i think... but i guess she could have registered him late, as it was'nt the law? If i send for the cert it's gonna cost me a tenner lol. Shall i take the gamble? haha

Good call. As his mother has listed herself as widow on earlier census's, i can imagine he has been told his father was unknown or deceased, but it is definately worth a shot, thank you! i didnt think of this avenue.

Thanks that's very helpful, looks like Thomas was illegitimate, son of Hannah Chater. He may not have a birth certificate it wasn't law until 1872. Need to find Hannah in 1861 she may have been in Service?
