ARC TBC.....Thomas Giles & Ann Taylor married 1885 Dudley

Post by beartalbot »

Looking for descendents of members of the above family. Thomas Giles b.1864 Dudley married Ann Taylor b.1861 Dudley were married in 1885 at Dudley. My Grandmother Annie Giles b.1897 Dudley was one of nine children born to the above couple, with two of her brothers relatively well known in the local area. Frank Giles b.1893 Dudley was an Oldbury Councillor and also helped found the Oldbury Referees Association, where he also officiated. Another brother Tom Giles b.1901 Dudley commenced his own business called Tom Giles Real Estate in the Oldbury area, which I understand is still operating under the same name today. Grandmother Annie Giles married Walter Talbot b.1897 West Bromwich at Church of StAndrew, West Bromwich in 1919 after Walter returned from WW1. After losing two children in 1922, they emigrated to Australia, where my father was the first of another seven children born to my Grandparents. As both came from large families, there must be many relatives still living in the Black Country area.

Thank you Antie Em for the link provided to Tom Giles Real Estate website. On visiting the site, I was surprised to notice that their profile states that members of Toms family are still actively involved in the business. As Tom and my Grandmother Annie were very close as brother and sister, with my Grandparents visiting Oldbury from Australia on many occasions, I am hopeful that I can contact his family members through the business. This may open up a totally new avenue in my family research. I have photos of Annie with her brothers Frank and Tom during their return visits in the 40's and 50's.

Thanks Northern Lass, have checked Talbots in BCC, none of them relate to family members I have researched. Unfortunately I have discovered that researching my family surnames in the Black Country area is like finding a needle in a haystack.
Smiths of Smethwick, Talbots of West Bromwich and Tutbury, Giles of Oldbury and Worcestershire and Taylors of Warwickshire appear to be the most common surnames in those areas. Also, they appear to use the same favourite given first names in each family, making research most difficult. Despite knowing from records that there are a huge number of younger descendants from these families still living in the Black Country area, it is disappointing to realise that none appears to have an interest in family history research.
I have just received a certified copy of my Grandparents Marriage Certificate with shows the following details -
Walter Talbot married Annie Giles at Church of St Andrew in West Bromwich on March 30th 1919. My Grandmother always stated that they were married in the church behind the Clock Tower in Carters Green, West Bromwich.
However I will continue researching from here in Australia, using useful websites like this, in the hope that I can continue to discover unknown family. I am sure that my proud Black Country Grandparents would be most happy for me to continue to record their history.
Again thanks for providing me with a forum to assist me in my research.

Thanks rockyfowler, both census reports do relate to my Giles family. I will now use this information to trace family through other census details.
To peterd, the above mentioned marriage certificate for Walter Talbot and Annie Giles shows Walters father as William Talbot and Annies as Thomas Giles.
Witnesses are shown as Albert Edward Talbot, Walters brother, and Beatrice Giles, Annies sister.
