ARC PENDING MORE INFO ........James Davis M Hannah Hipkiss,

Post by normandmal »

Would anyone be kind enough to look up the marriage records of one of my ancestors please. James Davies/Davis was born in St Helens, Lancs abt 1792 and moved to Rowley Regis some time later and married
Hannah Hipkiss at St Marys Church, Kingswinford on 26th December, 1811.

I've not been able to get his birth certificate because not sure his parents names so I am hoping to find his fathers name on his marriage records, thanks

Did'nt realise fathers names were'nt listed on marriage certificate pre 1837! That was my only hope of confirming James's father. Thanks for supplying the names of Witness's thou! I only know he was born in St Helens, Lancs abt 1792 because its recorded on the Census. Has anyone any ideas how to find his birth - Davies/Davis is quite a popular name and obviously I need to be sure I've got the correct James!

There is a James Davis born 9 July 1792, bapt 22 July 1792, at St Helen's, son of Thomas Davis.
Couldn't see any others around 1792 in St Helen's, but there are quite a few of similar date for rest of Lancashire.

Thats great thanks! I'll make a note of those dates - they look good but think I would need to confirm his fathers name with other records - Any ideas?

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

There are no Certificates before 1837, only Parish Records, Civil Registration 1837 (Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates.) As Peter suggested you need to find James on every Census and see who his neighbours were, any Parents, Brothers or Sisters and check out their Marriages, if anyone of them Married twice and the 2nd Marriage was after Sep 1837 you are in luck.

James is only the Census for 1841 and 1851. He may have died before the next one! I have checked both Census and in 1841 it says he was born abt 1796 and on the 1851 Census it states abt 1792. I have checked to see if there are any other Davis/Davies family members living nearby and coming from Lancashire, but most of them were born in Rowley Regis where James and Hannah lived with their children. There are many Hipkiss's living nearby but no siblings to James. I'm not sure if his family moved from St Helens in search of work whilst James was a young boy or infact it was just James that was looking for work!
