Whereabouts in Wales did he start his walk?
I walked it back to Rowley Regis from Kiddy once. We'd been down The Black Horse and one of our mates drove back without us.

She is busy at the moment ,marking exam results on Romeo and Juliet. I have sent her a message for dates.I don't know if I want to introduce her to you men  . She might get back to me tomorrow. She must have got her information from somewhere .I must ask? She wanted to know which roads he would have taken .There would not have been many proper road then ,only dirt tracks (thinking about 1860ish maybe) What do you all think? :-)

We had the railways then dt

The first steam engine is in The Black Country Museum - 1712 Industrial stationary steam engine developed by Thomas Newcomen

In 1862 South Wales Railway amalgamated with the Great Western Railway

The line that ran through Rhymney, in South Wales, was built in 1858. Spent many hours when I was a kid standing on the platform there. Don't know where in particular it ran to then, but we used to get there from Dudley Port.

Oh What will you give me?
Say the sad bells of Rhymney
Is there hope for the future?
Say the brown bells of Merthyr
Who made the mine owner?
Say the black bells of Rhondda

No reason why the man wouldn't walk even if there was a railway. The route would depend on where he started from though!

The Benjamin Williams linked to on BCC seems to be this one

1851
Benjamin Williams 60 born Rowley Regis
Ann Williams 57
Ann Eliza Williams 21
Benjamin Williams 16

1841
Benjm Williams 50
Ann Williams 45
Phineas Williams 15
Eleazar Williams 15
Ann Eliza Williams 10
Benjamin Williams 6

This could be him

Parents: Elijah Williams,"‹ Rachl.

name: Benjamin Williams
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 21 Oct 1792
baptism/christening place: ROWLEY REGIS,STAFFORD,ENGLAND
birth date: 1790
father's name: Elijah Williams
mother's name: Rachl.
