Hello,

Apologies for the length of this first post; I am researching the history, growth and decline of the New Cut Market, a famous street market in Lambeth, South London from the first half of the nineteenth century to c.1950.
The area the market covered was from Blackfriars Road in Southwark, and snaked nearly three miles to end up at Vauxhall; it incorporated what is now: The Cut, The Lower Marsh, Carlisle Lane and The Lambeth Walk.
I am also interested in a family of barrow and cart builders that resided in the area by Lambeth Walk by the name of Tappy, I have had some connection with a descendent of Joseph Tappy the original builder, but would always appreciate more information.
Maybe someone on this forum worked in the area years ago? Maybe someone knows of a relative that worked in and around the market in some way?

I would be interested to hear from anybody in any capacity.

Welcome to the forum. I worked a bit away from there, in the Borough Market, for a few years in the late 70s - early 80s, and occasionally wandered the area you talk of whilst waiting for deliveries to arrive, I'm pretty sure that the bit of The Cut (previously New Cut) across the road from The Old Vic theatre down towards The Young Vic still had market stalls on some days at least but I'm afraid I don't go far enough back for your research.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.
