Lydia Walsh is my Great Grandmother. Here is Lydia in 1871, 1861 & 1851 with her family on the census returns, per Ancestry.
At New Cross, Manchester in 1871;
James Walsh Head 49 Power Loom Over-looker Lancs. Over Darwen
Mary Walsh Wife 50 Lancs. Chorley
Eliza Walsh Dau 16 Weaver Cheshire, Stockport
Lydia Walsh Dau 19 Weaver Cheshire, Stockport
Emma Ollerton Dau 21 Weaver Cheshire, Stockport
Sarah Ollerton G Dau 3 Lancs. Chorley
James has three wives over the piece (Sarah 1851, Mary 1871 & Elizabeth 1881). To lose one wife is unfortunate to lose two is just careless!
In the 1871 census return Lydia"™s sister Emma Jane has a married name of Ollerton. There is child with the same surname aged 3.
At Alfred Court, Chorley, Lancs. In 1861;
James Walsh Head 39 Cotton Weaver Lancs. Over Darwen
Emma Jane Walsh Dau 14 Cotton Weaver Cheshire, Stockport
Lydia Walsh Dau 10 Scholar Cheshire, Stockport
Eliza Walsh Dau 6 Scholar Cheshire, Stockport
By the time the 1861 census return comes around Lydia"™s mother, Sarah Ann Leigh, has died. I have not established if the family had moved to Chorley prior to her death, but I doubt it.
At 61 New Bridge Lane, Stockport in 1851;
James Walsh Head 28 Power Loom Weaver Lancs. Darwen
Sarah Ann Walsh Wife 28 Cheshire Stockport
Emma Walsh Dau 4 Cheshire, Stockport
Lydia Walsh Dau - Cheshire, Stockport
Mary Leigh M in L 70 Yorkshire
Colin Sykes Uncle 35 Cheshire, Stockport
Robert Sykes Cousin 9 Cheshire, Stockport
I"™m guessing here but I think that the Sykes listed will be Sara Ann"™s relatives and not those of James Walsh. I find it interesting to see Mary Leigh appearing here. I wonder if she was a permanent feature or just visiting, new baby etc. Mary Leigh must have lived in Stockport as Sarah Ann was born in Stockport.
James was born in Darwen, Lancs. His parents were Anyon Walsh & Margaret (Peggy) Leach. They had a least ten children per LDS. Anyon seems to have been born in Darwen whereas Peggy is born in Manchester.
I have found James brother Anyon in Derbyshire in 1861 which suggests that people were far mobile in those days than perhaps we would think.
So my brick walls are how to get further back on:
1) Anyon & Peggy
2) Mary Leigh
All suggestions welcome

Re: WALSH
Thank you for the information supplied.
Sorry for the delay at getting back to you but this thing called work got in the way.
I had not heard of the website on the link provided but it seems extremely useful and will have an extended look shortly.
If I ordered the death certificate of Anyon Walsh would his fathers name be recorded?
I also want to try and get further back for Mary Leigh. Has anyone any thoughts?
Cheers

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Re: WALSH
Oh yes, the old scattergun approach to family history. Thanks peterd I'm sure all the Anyon or Anion Walsh's listed could be cousins/nephews/uncles of my Onion, I mean Anyon.
But both BC Wench and yourself have kindly shown definite events such as Anyon marrying Peggy Leach 1817 and Anyon's death in 1866. Both indicate a birth between 1891 & 1896. There are no births of an Anyon in that time frame listed anywhere in England never mind specifically Darwen, Lancs.
I had hoped for a record collection other than LDS or Ancestry that you guys would know of. I'm a tourist frae Scotland remember.
So nothing on Mary Leigh then?

The only other names on a death certificate besides Anyon's would be the Informant of the death, i.e. a relation and the Registrar's name.
This looks good for the Baptism of Anyon Walsh which I found on the LDS (Familysearch) web site
name: Anyon Welch
parents: William Welch, Grace
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 13 Apr 1791
baptism/christening place: CHAPEL STREET INDEPENDENT,BLACKBURN,LANCASHIRE,ENGLAND
birth date: 08 Mar 1791
father's name: William Welch
mother's name: Grace
indexing project (batch) number: J08633-2
system origin: England-ODM
source film number: 0560875 (RG4 1018)
Possible marriage of Anyon"™s parents??
Name: William Walsh
Gender: Male
Spouse's Name: Grace Gibson
Marriage Date: 26 Aug 1779
Marriage Place: Blackburn, Lancashire, England
Do you have the marriage certificate of James Walsh & Sarah Ann Leigh or Lee?
Found on FreeBMD
Marriages Sep 1845
LEE Sarah Ann Stockport 19 239
Walsh James Stockport 19 239
Found on UKBMD
LEE Sarah Ann WALSH James 1845 Heaton Norris, St Thomas Cheshire Stockport ST7/1/99
The marriage certificate will have the groom"™s father"™s names on it, if Sarah Ann"™s father hasn"™t died before her marriage in 1845 it will have her father"™s name on as well. If he has died it will more than likely say "Deceased"
There are a number of Mary Leigh/Lee born about 1781 on Ancestry, so you really need the marriage certificate of Sarah Ann to find her father"™s name, then try to find them on the censuses.
On the main Board Index of this forum is a "Links" section which I"™m sure will prove very useful.
Hope this helps

Re: WALSH
Thank you for the info & guidance.
This is what I wanted, thank you. It confirms what I thought and gives me a route forward (in fact backwards) for the surname Leigh.
The William & Grace Walsh event is isolated in that I cannot think of a way to double check it. Any thoughts?
A merry Christmas to you and yours.
Cheers
