The date on the photo was 1963 so I though they may have been residents with us at Nunawading Immigrant Hostel.
I asked mum and found out it was the Harrington family from Essex. They came over in 1963, couldn't handle the climate, went back to England in 1964 and then came back to Oz in 1970.
Instead of Victoria they decided to make their home in Cronulla in New South Wales.
The little girl at the front is Jeanette Marie Harrington.
In September 1973 she was playing at her friends house about ten minutes from where she lived.
When it was time to go home her friend offered the walk with her but she declined as it was "just up the road".
She never made it home and at the age of 14 was found the next day raped and then strangled to death.
The murderer has never been found but they suspect she may have been a victim of a serial murderer know as "Mr Squeaky". He is blamed for a series of murders across three states and I think his body count was ten or more.
So sometimes it is not just your family that provides interesting stories int his hobby. Others who have crossed your path also have stories to tell.
