-William as a lodger in Richards house not down as father
-Richard putting father as William Coley not William Smith
-Bapt for Richard as a William and Mary Smith
-on Wm Smiths death ...."Sarah Coley daughter in law in attendance."
-Wm Smiths father is a Richard

-also Mary dies and is regis as Mary Coley not Mary Smith ...but in 1841 Wm Smith is with Richard Coley next door to Elizabeth Smith
the informant on Marys death certif

from link....
http://rhhs.org.uk/graves/coley-smiths.html
"One such informant was his grandson, Harry Moore, who died in 1974 at the age of eighty.
He offered an explanation for the mystery surrounding the name.
According to Mr. Moore, Richard"™s father had died and his mother remarried before Richard was born.
His father was named Coley and his stepfather was named Smith.
It was considered that Richard should carry both names.
No matter what name Richard started life with, he bore the double name, or had it bestowed upon him when he died.
Will Hackett, who has lived in Hasbury for all his ninety years, remembers Richard as "˜Dick Smith"™.
He described Richard as being the favourite nephew of Thomas Coley, the owner of a prosperous "˜button manufactory"™ in Love Lane, Hasbury. Thomas Coley is reputed to have advanced the money to start the nailmaking business which Richard carried on throughout his adult life.
Will Hackett also recounted how Richard took a Jack Ingram as a business partner. Ingram married Leah Crumpton, the sister of Richard"™s wife."

I have linked for moment Mary Unknown to this unknown Coley
based on grandsons info on the link by Norman Jones

But I think Wm Smith is father to Richard Coley Smith
and that Mary Unknown married a Coley

Some good possibles there Jan. Will have a search later when I get on my PC. Trouble is some people say they were married when they weren't others were illegitimate & others chaged their names when they felt the need. Will see what I can find. Linell.

Thanks Linell.

I think myself that Richard Coley Smith is son of Wm Smith and Mary Unknown.
Looks like she may have been married previously to a Coley and possibly from that family of Joseph the farmer and wife Sarah.

The only thing that bugs me is why isnt William Smith informant on that death certif.
Why is she mary Coley even if they werent married but living as man and wife she should be Mary Smith on certif.

And that Maria Rudge marriage is odd.....Thomas Coley as witness.

too be honest I have tied myself in knots with it now

The only burial for a Mr Coley before 1837 was a Benjamin from Hasbury 15.1.1834 aged 37, Mary lived in the Borough, but suppose if she was Married to Benjamin she may have moved, not far from Hasbury to the Borough a couple of hundred yards.

Also found these Coley Illey burials, not checked yet to see if there are any baps for them:-

15.6.1825 Arthur Coley Illey Infant
1.8.1825 George Coley Illey Infant
13.12.1825 David Coley Infant (this one was Hayley Green but the easier to trace christian name it may help)
13.7.1828 Thomas Coley Illey 22

And 24.12.1837 Mary Coley Borough 34

Some Coley Marriages all Halesowen:-

10.6.1821 Joseph Coley X otp Bach and Maria Rudge X otp Sp - Witnesses Thomas Coley and Sarah Hill by Banns.
26.1.1823 Samuel Hadley X otp Bach and Lucy Coley X otp Sp - Witnesses Joseph and Maria Coley (Lucy probable sister)
18.10.1824 John Coley X otp Bach and Eleanor Taplin otp Sp - Witnesses Thomas and Sarah Coley. (John brother to Thomas) This Thomas must have been a generation later than the one who was buried in 1828.

Will check IGI. Linell.

HI Jan, I always wondered if Wm Smith was previously Married and that is why he and Mary didn't marry, seems inconceivable that Mary's death was registered as Coley if she was Smith. But then Mary could also be a widow, one of these where the husband just disappears somewhere, you know what I mean!!

The Rudge connection is good, see I found a Marriage for Joseph Coley and Maria Rudge, think you may already have that.

As for Wm Smith not being informant, think that was quite common, spouse at bedside, a relative or neighbour ran off to register the death. I have a lot like that.

Ok will see what the IGI has...........

Ok with you on the informant bit sounds reasonable

But like you that Rudge connection you mentioned ages ago I think there is something there.
Why would William Smith be with a William Hackett and Betty Hackett nee Rudge in 1851 and there in 1841 (as well as with his mother in 1841)
Then Richard Coley Smith with Wm Hacketts son Thomas Hackett and wife Phebe in 1851.

got to be some connection to Rudge.
That marriage looks good for names of wits Thomas Coley ....button maker poss and a sarah Hill.

is there a burial for a Joseph Coley that would fit?
