George Tilsley soldier of the Crimea

I recently found out that a relative of mine had served in the Crimea .... I found an article on him on this rather good website
www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk

and thought I would see if I could find any Black Country soldiers in the Crimea.

I found this extract from The Birmingham Daily Post of 12 Nov 1864, relating to a George Tilsley ... what a send off!

entitled "Funeral of a Crimean Hero"..
It reports that the previous week Troop Sergeant Major George S Tilsley of the Scots Grays had died of consumption, aged 36, at the residence of his brother, Mr Tilsley, The Cart & Horses Inn, West Bromwich Street,Oldbury.
He was evidently a man held in very high regard, a soldier for over twenty years and had been on active service at Balaklava at the time of The Charge of the Light Brigade.
He was on a leave of absence at the time of his death because of his illness.
So well respected was he, that several thousand people attended his funeral at St. Peters Church, Greets Green, West Bromwich.
A procession took place from his brother's home at 3pm on Nov 11th , led by a detachment of the 12th Lancers accompanied by Major Campbell and Captain Le Queene , 18 of these made up the firing party. Following them was the band of the Oldbury Volunteers, then came the hearse pulled by four horses
A single horse carried the accoutrements of the deceased with his boots being reversed, then came the friends and relatives. Members of Oldbury & Dudley Rifle Volunteers and Worcestershire Yeomanry Cavalry were also in attendance.
14 NCOs from the Scots Grays acted as bearers.
The funeral service was carried out with full ceremony, including the firing of three volleys over the grave.
The deceased had been awarded ,in life, the French war medal for distinguished service, The Crimean medal with 3 clasps and the Turkish medal.


I also came across this on the England and Wales Probate Calendar, which I think must be the same man.
George Soley Tilsley, probate date 8 Dec 1864. Letters of Administration of the personal estate of George Soley Tilsley late of West Bromwich Street. Oldbury, Worcs. Bachelor deceased who died 5 Nov at West Bromwich St. were granted at Worcester to Robert William Tilsley of West Bromwich Street aforesaid Accountant. Effects under 100 pounds.

Any relation to Robert William Tilsley, Landlord of the Waggon and Horses, Church Street, Oldbury, 1871 - 1873

There is an article from the Dudley Herald about the death of Agnes Burrell, a domestic servant, who had been with the family for 7 years. It appears he had been out shooting and left his loaded gun on a table in one of the back rooms. Agnes picked it up and the gun went off, killing her.

Robert was also a colamaster of Tilsley and Peacock of Roway New Colliery.
