George Seymour
His obituary says that he was born 17th August 1848 at Boston, Lincolnshire
Both parents died when he was young and he was adopted by an uncle, a well known ship owner.
Sent off to school in Peru (!) at 13, then near Paris, then Wiesbaden.
I think he may have missed the 1871 census because he was shipwrecked and stuck in Iceland for a few months. He left on 31st March so doubt if he made it in time for the census on April 2nd. Then he may have missed the 1881 and 1891 census as he worked a lot overseas. He died 4th January 1896.
I didn't manage to find him in the 1851 census, I'm guessing he was by then either with his uncle or at least with parents who were not ag lab etc. Must have been a bit better off?
He is referred to later as George Seymour (fils) so I wondered if his uncle was George Seymour i.e. the ship owner. Then again this might be a red herring. And I guess it is also possible that he was born with a different surname and adopted by his mother's brother?
Can anyone make headway with this? Perhaps find me a Seymour who owned ships?
This George Seymour joined Mr Emerson Bainbridge and Mr Rathbone in 1881 and they formed a mining engineering company if that is any help.
I'm just curious about who the uncle was and who his parents were.
