Thourght this worth sharing!

Post by snoopysue »

The following is a will i received through the post yesterday, all the others I have are in legal jargon, so this was a breath of fresh air!!

This is the last Will and Testament

of me POLLIE ALLMARK
of 71 CHURCH LANE WEST BROMWICH
in the County of S. STAFFORSHIRE made this SEVENTH day of DECEMBER in the year of our LORD one thousand nine hundred and 54

I HEREBY revoke all Wills made by me at any time heretofore. I appoint FRED CARDER, 33 CALDWELL ST. WEST BROMWICH, LESLIE BELLINGHAM, CHURCH LANE, WEST BROMWICH to be my Executor , and direct that all my Debts and Funeral Expenses shall be paid as soon as conveniently may be after my decease.

I GIVE AND BEQUEATH unto
My daughter Mabel £400 and the rest of my money to be equally divided between my other four children. The shop contents to be sold and my husband to have the proceeds therefrom. Mabel is to have my cameo ring, Evelyn cameo brooch. My sister Ivy my brooch with the pearls. My daughter in laws Joan and Irene from Handsworth to choose afterwards jewelry or beads. The 5/- piece in case is for David if his own is lost.
If any of my children die their share is to go to their children when they are twenty-one.

If the shop has been sold before I die Mabel is still to have £400 and everything that has been bought in my name, in the home.

There is money in the box in the wardrobe. I will £20 to my sister Ivy, £10 to Mrs Bellingham Church Lane. The rest to go towards paying expenses.
My children that owe me any money pay up before they can receive any out of my estate and that they pay to go to Mabel: give Betty what piece of jewelry she would like.

Signed by the TESTATOR in the Presence of us, present at the same time, who at h request, in h presence, and in the presence of each other, have subscribed our names as witnesses.
Pollie Allmark
Frederick William Carder
L.A. Bellingham

The copy I have seems to be a photocopy of the original, hand written on a standard form. The signature of Pollie looks to match up with the rest of the will and the two witnesses (who are the executors) signatures are in different hands. There are also gaps where Pollie should have added an "s" at the end of Executor, and fill in so it reads "her request, in her presence", but she hasn't done this.

I have a old letter to my grandad from Handsworth Council in 1907 asking him what wage he would like if they offered him the job of steam roller driver. Which i treasure. My daughter found on a site on the internet the letter he wrote in his own handwriting applying for the vacancy. she copied the letter and lost it :( she could not find it anywhere and i expect it got thrown out by mistake. She could not remember which site it was on and, i have spent hours looking for it and sending emails in the hope someone has it. Having said all that, i think your will is something to be treasured . :-) Dt

I also have a transcript of a letter my nan sent my sister about her time in school. I hope my has the original, but knowing her.....
At least I managed to get a transcript of it.

The will is a photocopy from the probate office, but it's obviously a copy of the original. Other's I've recieved of the same sort of age seem also to be photocopies of the original, so I can possibly see great grandparents signatures. Although with one of them I could check it against the 1911 Census, and I'm not so sure. The writing slopes in opposite directions, and the census is way neater than the will - I wonder if the census was filled in by my gr grandfather's wife - I'll never know!!
