History of the Spittle Family

Post by mumbles »

This is a condensed version of History of one branch of Spittle Family. Details of family will be inserted on Bcc later
Spittle or Spital Family originated in Enville area of Staffordshire c. 1300 and mainly worked on estates of Strang(e)ways and Wrottesley families. From 16th Century onwards powers of landlords and development of their Enville estates probably caused Spittles to migrate into industrialised areas such as Wolverhampton, Wednesbury, Kingswinford and Rowley Regis. Thus in late 18th Century they were found to be Carpenters, Nail Makers and Iron Founders and Pattern Makers.
Joseph & Rebecca Spittle born c. 1750 were to be found in Enville in 1775 and had moved
to Kingswinford by 1800 by which time they had 7 children ( John born 1775, Thomas born 1777, Amy born 1780, Mary born 1782, William born 1785, Ann born 1789, Benjamin born 1792 and Samuel born 1800.
Thomas born 1777 remained in Midlands and became a Pattern Maker in the iron industry and one of his sons Thomas (T.S.) was born in Rowley Regis in 1806 and in 1833 he migrated to Abersychan, Monmouthshire South Wales as an Iron Moulder . William born 1785 and Benjamin born 1792 were Carpenters and migrated to Abersychan area before their nephew Thomas (T.S.)born 1806 and later in mid 19th Century their descendants families moved to Newport Monmouthshire to work in the Cambrian Iron Foundry bought by their nephew in 1854
T.S. was by now a very rich man who became known as an “Iron King of Newport” employing over 200 men and living in a grand Italianate-style house called Cambrian House in Maindee , Newport with servants and grooms.
Descendants & relatives of T.S. carried on business from his death in 1878 to 1940 and because T.S. sponsored most of his relatives and children to colleges such as Eton, Monmouth and St. Saviour's in Sussex most went on to marry into families of Landowners, Ministers, Barristers and Surgeons.
T.S. and most of his brothers were born in humble beginnings in Rowley Regis working in the cottage industries of the time set up with forges in back yards and it seems matters went full circle as his descendants became part of the landed gentry who had caused his ancestors to move off the land in 16th and 17th Centuries
