Oh, you English!!!
Carol, the cream is there because it's .... creamy. Given the chance, I'll always stick in cream ... and cheese ... and butter. Blow the cholesterol!
I think the buttered dish is because it's supposed to be cooked and cooked and cooked 'til the edges go all brown and crisp - and would stick to the dish.
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

Well, that wasn't at all bad! Think I overcooked the top a bit, but generally it turned out nice & CREAMY.
Himself approved, so that's a few brownie points I shall cash in at a later date.

Well, mine was really tasty and like Di, I overcooked the top a little but it looked superb!
Hubby thought it was very nice but didn't go overboard so i'm gonna give it a....
