ARC TBC................Fantastic Vanishing Act.

Post by caniavapbob »

Most of my family have, up to know, have been reasonably tracable. We have had a few problems with wrong transcriptions and unreadable occupations, but thats fairly normal, so I'm told, concidering the state of education all those years ago. This one however, is proving to be a bit of a nightmare. I have an interest, in a family whose name is Ruston, who all came from, or were born in Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. One member of this family, Joseph Ruston, born in March,1856, married, in 1876, one Eliza Quoit. ( date of birth likely to be the same year, 1856 ) One of the witnesses to this event, was her brother, ( also called Joseph ) who was possibly born in 1853, his age on the document, being given as 23. Can anyone help in finding the Quoit Family, who, given that Eliza is a spinster of the Parish, and was born in Rowley Regis, must have been in the area for some time. My brother, who did not use a computer in the original search, ( they hadn't been invented then ) couldn't find them after the marriage. Having been bought this new toy by my loving family, I have been asked to try and sort it out, aided, I should add, by my all knowing grandaughter. ( Makes you sick doesn't it, when you watch their fingers flick faster than light across a keyboard knowing that it will take me an hour to do exactly the same thing.) Any help on the matter will, I can assure you, be very gratefully received.

Can I take it then Jimmy, that a family named Quoit, did not exist in Rowley Regis in the time period, and that as they could not read or write, the Vicar wrote down the name as he thought it should be spelt. Eliza Quoit then, is actually Eliza Kite. Well, that clears that up then, thank you Jimmy for the time, I will pass that on to my brother. I have had a look at the link Rocky Fowler posted to BCC. and am now a bit confused as to which Joseph Ruston it applies. Confusingly, there was a Joseph Rushton born in Dudley in 1856, the same year that Joseph Ruston was born in Rowley Regis. Whats even worse, is that later on, the gentleman from Dudley dropped the H from his surname. My brothers notes suggest that the Joseph Ruston married in Saint Pauls Blackheath, in 1887, was actually born in 1861, and is in the 1881 Census. His parents were Joseph and Mary Ann Ruston, and this may be the one that worked at the Hobbs brickworks in Cakemore Road. Perhaps Rob may care to share some information with me, offline of course, I wouldn't wish to use up valuable space on the site.

I would put it down to the vicar not being able to understand the local accent, so he wrote down what he thought he had heard.
