Free Birth certificate online U.K.?

Post by Kleftiwallah »

Hello, It's that pest again. . . .

I think I have laid out all I know up to now of the Oakes family using G.S.P. Family Tree. Now I've been trying to find out more about Grandad and his eight kids! I chose the most 'interesting' name to try and find a birth certificate on the mighty computer. I tried Free BMD and plugged in Ethel Maud Daisy, her birth year and place of birth but it came back 'no record'.

Is this just a 'come-on' to get you to sign up and hand over mula before they let you 'ave a shufti'? Or am I doing something wrong.

This is what came up in the list - "There are no birth, marriage or death certificates available to view online.at The National Archives. This guide will help you to find out where else you can look".

So why is this entry even on the list ! ! ! (no MAD smilie available)!

So if anyone knows where I can see certificates, could you let me know!

Cheers, Tony.

Elizabeth Amy - b 1900
Arthur John Humphrey known as Sonny the name Hurdley is a mistransposition!) my Dad b 1901
Sarah Doris (known as Dolly)- b 1903
Harry Charles Groves - b 1907
Lucy Jessie Edith - b 1911

If you want to Linell, look up http://www.bimson.com/ancestry/surnames.html I'm the Anthony Lionel Phillips. Sadly the compiler has passed away and his relatives have said they are not going to continue Arthur Bimson's work.

Thanks a million. Tony.

So if I bung 1d in the volume and 221 in the page, this birth cert' shoud pop up?

Just tried Elizabeth Mary Sanford Hackney as a test piece and popped in the volume and page and "Sorry we have no record"! I thought I would go right to it !

I've booked an hour on the Library computer for tomorrow morning, I hope there is a librarian as helpful as your good selves.

Yippee! I found Albert Walter on the list. So the next question is where do I go with that small ammount of information . Can I view the actual birth certificate to find out whereabouts he was born 'and stuff'?

Cheers, Tony.

You might be able to find an image of a record on Ancestry if you either pay for the package or go to the library. Some areas, especially London, have some Parish Records on film. Once you've done your search and gone to the transcribed record there is sometimes an image that can be viewed like with the census records.

Thanks to all. What you have been trying to explain to me is finally soaking through the swede!

I've already discovered my Dad's name Humphrey is written as Hurdley and Uncle Harry Charles Groves is written as George, so I shall have to keep my wits about me!

Could someone tell me what this (below) refers to?

You can view the original scan that was used to transcribe this entry. The following is a list of scan files that contain the entry.
